I've been giving to DU for a number of years. But I can't do any damn' thing the way other people do it, I'm psychotic that way. I have a fanatical distaste for Paypal so I can't donate online anymore. I send a paper check. Usually when it's NOT a fund drive. I send it when I have it, usually at least once a year. It's a moderately substantial amount. It would buy a lot of stickies and stars, but since it's not done via the online mechanism, I never get the chance to do stars, stickies, hearts, other stuff like that. Mostly I don't miss it.
I couldn't get all the way through Skinner's thread (I'm not sure whether "more than 1400 posts" is a record, but it's up there.) I skimmed it. I read parts more carefully than other parts, largely at random, actually.
So, anyway. Guys, if yer reading, have a moment, here's some people I'd like to get stickies and stars:
1. Someone who agrees with me on 'most everything. (Because, after all, we should be encouraging our friends, right?)
2. Someone who disagrees with me on 'most everything, wittily and articulately. (Y'all know who you are, I think.) Because, after all, we are HERE, we are talking, we are each trying, in our own ways, to make the world a better place. I still think yer wrong, wrong, WRONG on just about everything, but, hey, I'm willing to admit the possibility that you might be right on something. Possibility. Not probability. But yeah, give you a sticky anyway. We all deserve a chance to say what we're passionate about.
3. Someone who cares deeply about the people behind the words on the screen here on DU. Who's always checking back with someone who wrote about being sad, or lonely, or having problems, and making sure things they know that they're not shouting into the wilderness, but that DU is a community and we care. Give them a COUPLE of stickies/stars, from me.
4. Someone who is passionately, passionately, PASSIONATELY committed to an unpopular cause. Because, damn' that's hard. I may not agree with that cause or like it or maybe just don't care about it as much as many other things I do care about, but I care about your caring. Because we can't all be on top of everything that needs to happen in this world, and without you and people like you, not a damn' thing would happen because we'd all be too busy only doing the things that interest us.
5. Someone who feels as though "DU has abandoned me and everything I care about." Because I'm pretty sure that, while that's not necessarily the case, it's better to stick with us and keep trying to redeem our souls from the Basement Cat of indifference and/or incorrectitude, than to walk away and never know how many friends you have here, really.
6. Someone who just discovered DU and feels like at last, they've found intelligent, articulate, thoughtful people arguing and laughing and exchanging news and opinions and shouting at each other and encouraging each other and it's a damn' fine place to be. Because you're right, it is.
7. An oldtimer who's donated regularly in the past but just can't manage it because times are too tight right now. But I know you've still got a lot of cool things to say. Have a sticky on me, and say 'em.
8. Someone I pissed off when I was moderating. Sorry. It goes with the job, I was doing it the best I could, but it's never fun to be on the other end. Have a star on me.
9. Someone who's infuriated by all those "leftier-than-thou" types who seem to completely miss the point of working together to reconcile different agendas and make progress at least on the things we DO agree on.
10. Someone who's enraged by all those woodchucky incrementalist fools who seem to completely miss the point of holding out for MORE than seems possible in order to achieve anything at all.
So, anyway, those are some of the stickies/stars I'd like to spread around. You guys know who these people are. They're all people I value highly even if we're not exactly BFFs or anything like that. And they all belong here on DU. And I'm proud that all of them have posted responses to me, argued with me, made jokes to me/at me/about me, called me out, applauded me, and generally made being part of this community such a wonderful, maddening, exhilarating experience for me.
appreciatively, Bright
