Nail Salon Charges More for Overweight Customers

Salon manager Kim Tran told Philips that the surcharge was due to costly repairs of broken chairs by overweight customers. She said the chairs have a weight capacity of 200 pounds and cost $2,500 to fix.
“Do you think that’s fair when we take $24 and we have to pay $2,500? Is that fair? No,” Tran told Philips.

when you set your standard price that all pay. I think Ms. Kim Tran needs to take some courses on basic business management.

4. Actually, they shouldn't have people use chairs that they are over the weight limit

for. If the chair breaks and the customer is injured, they will be liable. It has happened in hospitals where equipment was used that couldn't support the extra weight and somebody got hurt. It can actually end up costing millions in damages.

they KNOW that the chairs are not good and can't hold weight above 200 lbs. This makes them liable and then some. They can't claim that they didn't know the chairs weren't strong enough.

Actually 200 lbs. is not a lot of weight IMO. Many people, esp. men weigh over 200 lbs. and a lot of women do too.

This woman running this business should invest in NEW chairs that meet the standards. She is too cheap to invest in them. She'll be sorry when she gets hit with a lawsuit for failing to upgrade the safety necessary/required in the shop.

I just googled a hair salon chair and the specs include a 400 pound weight capacity.

I don't know what kind this salon uses for nails but it may be those large massage chairs. Surely they would have specs, too.

I'm with the other poster. If they know the customer might get hurt, they should have an alternative.
