A rare sighting

As is required when trying to prove the existence of a rumored species, this photo is a bit grainy. That said, I have encountered the creature on a number of occasions and can thus certify that the picture is that of a genuine Goodguy Republican. His name is Tom Selders, and he used to be the mayor of Greeley, Colorado. He was ousted after he made national news for his stance that the raid on our meatpacking plant (2006) was not a good thing. He made enemies within his party by testifying to Congress about just how wrong those raids were, and chief among those enemies was one Ken Buck. Buck retaliated by helping to organize and engineer a very nasty campaign that saw a Buck thug replacing Selders on the ballot.

Selders, being a Good Guy and wanting to retain that status, left the Republican party and joined the Democrats. He's shown here (on the right) introducing Sen. Michael Bennet at this morning's town hall meeting. Sen.Bennet is being challenged for his Senate seat by Ken Buck, who would not be happy to see this picture. Heh.

1. the thought of that misogynistic cretin, buck, being a CO senator makes me ill.

if he makes it, and tancredo or maes makes it, I will seriously have to think about leaving.

2. Makes me wonder why Tom Selders was ever a repug in the first place

Could he have been considered a 'moderate Republican' years ago? It's likely that the ground shifted beneath his feet and his views are now more in-line with modern-day Democrats. I hope this trend continues unabated.

3. In a place like Greeley. (Weld county CO)

the voter registrations of rethugs to Dems is huge! (I think it is something like 3 or 4 to 1) the dog catcher, social services, garbage men... EVERY office is held by republicans.

Sanity is NOT a Weld county virtue... (and my great, great, great, great grandfather was one of the first white guys to set foot in that place.)

4. Actually, it's getting a little better.

It's almost a three-way even split between R, D and unaffiliated, with the Rs having a slight lead. We're getting there, but the closer we get the uglier they get.

5. Yes... and nearby Fort Collins is far too Rethug for a college town

though with a more sizable opposition than Greeley.

is more republican these days. I went to school there, 20 years ago. back then Greeley and Loveland were far more republican then the fort.

into the 2000s. Plus the proximity to Wyoming, I suppose. :shrug:

7. What are his positions on other defining issues?

Simply being against the ICE raids doesn't make him "good" any more than in favor legalizing pot does. Did he oppose the raids because the plant would have to increase pay to the replacement workers, or was it a genuine concern for the people victimized by them?
