Poll question: Where do you live (your abode, home, domicile)

I lived in and owned houses most of my life. A couple of years ago, I decided I was done with the American dream. I was told I couldn't shovel snow any longer, mowing the lawn screwed up my sinuses so bad that I was sick until the lawn needed mowing again, and paying for heating oil was killing me. So I move into an apartment. It ain't perfect, but heat hot water and water included, haven't had a rent increase in 3 years, and my neighbors are relatively quiet.


Where do you live and if I may ask why there.

15. house we bought on the outskirts of a small town

bought it at a sheriffs auction and totally remodeled it, all the wiring and plumbing. rearranged the interior walls to suit our needs, I stripped it down to the outside walls and sub floors I've done all the work myself and am about finished with it. Good enough is not part of my vocabulary. if it isn't perfect Its gets done again until it is. We're told we have a very beautiful place inside and out. our yard draws rave reviews from everyone who sees it. Other than that just a little ole place on the outskirts of town. When we retire we hope to not have to do any work on our house at all. slowly but surely we're replacing all the appliances so we won't have any surprises there either. We bought a new zero turn Cub Cadet mower with a 22 hp engine three years ago that should last us until we won't be able to mow any longer. Recently we just purchased ourselves an 18 ft open bow inboard/outdrive boat with a 170 hp mercruiser engine. We plan to keep our old pontoon boat to use for fishing from but if the right offer comes by it'll be gone. We've had it ten or so years so we feel it owes us not a penny as we've used it a bunch. We try not to do anything on the spur of the moment, its all planned out looking at the big picture only. As my mother would say, poor people have poor ways
Just a little ole place on the outskirts of a little ole town that my wife was raised in and only 11 miles from my home place which my family, brothers and sisters and me still own. We spend our time and money on our home, maybe spend a night or two every year away for a vacation.

12. I rent a house. My husband and I aren't comfortable buying a

house when we only have one income. Plus it's nice not having to do maintenance and lawn work :)

a whole series of tenement apartments, and spent a mercifully brief time in a shelter.

I actually have the fondest memories of that single wide trailer. Maintenance was minimal, there was enough space for a small veggie garden and no lawn, and there was a place for everything. If I could have plunked it down on a lot in this part of town, I would have.

I hate zoning.

The worst was a shelter and I fully understand why people would rather live on the street, with or without boxes to shelter them.

Why? Been in this area for 20 years. Guess this is where I'm staying for a while. The neighborhood is nice, the yard is perfect for all the dogs. It's also made from concrete, so I'll worry a tiny bit less during hurricane season.

18. I live with my daughter because I took care of my other daughter

who is developmentally disabled for 45 years. That leaves me with a minimum social security payment and I owe too much on a credit card - thus I cannot afford to live anywhere else.

It probably has something to do with a partial childhood in the country and (later) the pregnant woman in the other half of the not-sound-insulated duplex who threw up very loudly, multiple times, every day for an extended period of time. There was no escape from the sounds she made. And that's why I will live in the country in my own house till they carry me off to the morgue or the nursing home.

25. I rent because I abhor being in debt. Also, when something breaks,

I don't have to pay to fix it. Also, if I get tired of being somewhere, I can simply move - I don't have to go through all the bs of selling/buying a house. If I get tired of the floorplan, I can change it simply by moving my stuff down the street to a new apartment with a new layout. If I want to go for a swim, I walk out to my in-ground pool. If I want to have a big party, I pay $50 for the club house. If I want to take a walk, there is a traffic-free sidewalk with pleasant landscaping encircling the complex. Sometimes I'd like to have my own lawn to mow but instead it is mowed once a week by a landscaping company. If I want to excercise, I go to the gym and use my own key to let myself in. There's also free wi-fi for those who can't afford a monthly internet bill.

So, there are lots of reasons I live in an apartment.

That's really the only thing for which I find myself at a disadvantage. I like mowing the lawn and I'd like to have a vegetable garden and some flower beds of my own. But, neither is enough to overcome all my other reasons for renting, rather than owning.

Not being in debt, makes me feel free. Like mowing the grass, for some odd reason. :) :hi:

and that's why I rent too. Except the yardwork...I hate it. Result of bailing the back 4 acres for hay every year growing up.

I've live in an apt since April of this year after paying a mortgage and repair bills for 15 yrs. Was sooo sick of the upkeep and the repairs.
Now all I do is send the maintenance guy a message and, poof, he is here the next day, I don't have to pay a bill and there is no need for me to take off work to be here. Hell, I even called them when my smoke detector battery starting beeping low battery riiiggghhhht as I got into bed at 10:30 pm..the ceiling is just high enough where I can't reach it and I don't own a ladder anymore. They came out within minutes and changed it.

And, as you said there is the pool and gym benefit. There is a on-site security officer, called him when some kids were trying to see if they could raise the dead with their screeching and screaming in the courtyard. Within minutes, all was quiet.

I just wish I had made the change sooner!

26. My husband and I both have a fierce need for privacy, so we have a house in the country.

It was a great deal when we bought it (location, location, location) and is a work in progress after 13 years. Our mortgage payment (plus taxes and insurance) is lower than the going rentals in the area. Plus, we have plenty of space to grow a good chunk of our food during the summer.
