Not to jinx Al for the Oscar, but I remember the year BACALL was a shoo-in for weeks and months before the night, then all we got was the camera catching her disappointment.

THE morning line has Al Gore copping an Oscar for his "An Inconvenient Truth" documentary. But since he didn't actually produce it, he can't go up onstage. Staying in his seat but maybe bowing and being acknowledged suits him perfectly. Precisely exactly how he wants to play it at this moment. It's how he's playing the will he/won't he presidential run.

NOTES FROM the Scooter Libby perjury trial in Washington show that a CIA official named Craig Schmall jotted down the following in the spring of 2003: "Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz at his office." The office was Libby's. Schmall told the jury, "Apparently Tom Cruise was there to talk with Mr. Libby about how Germany treats Scientologists."
