People who aren't involved in politics are only as perceptive as the news stations they watch, the newspapers that they read. So what if Rupert Murdoch owns 1/2 the mainstream media? People watch Fox because none of the major news outlets cover what many of them want to see in the news. And let's face it--this is a huge part of the problem with the populace of the United States of America.
WE (at DU) are not common folk. Most DUers are better informed than 90% of the country. We know the issues we are keen on, and we follow those issues from one source to another, and we always base our judgements on more than one news outlet. We check up on the issues through a wide variety of source material, and find we are capable of arguing (or not) reasonably well as a result.
Most people don't do that. I thought about this post after another posting I did made me realize that most people don't give a shit about the truth. They catch a news bit on some station or in some newspaper, and don't know whether it's from a liberal or a conservative POV. If they like the topic, they will pay a little more attention when they can, but they rarely remember when it comes to the voting on a subject.
And everytime we here a liberal/leftie talk about something which concerns us, we know they are preaching to the choir, but the general population doesn't give a crap. The right-wing media paints us as crazy, just as we paint them in a similar fashion. But Fox goes straight to the heart of a matter and skews it so absolutely that even our mothers might get convinced.
We need more contact--the SAME thing that the Tea Party is doing. We need to get out there in places where liberals can show the country that issues go FAR deeper than the shallow coverage they generally see. We need to bring with us charts, figures, and provable statistics that they can verify for themselves. We need to make the facts compelling enough that people will suddenly realize that they care about something, and they will become more active (in one form or another) in making choices.
I realize that our country might be deaf, but they also have a stubborn streak that defies science. And even if we show them the evidence, they might still be caught up with the issues on an emotional level. But I think that many people might be persuaded by personal contact with them, in places like shopping malls, city parks, and every place that draws a crowd. It's why the Tea Party is influencing a lot of people, simply by being available on a personal basis.
If we can get to many of these places and present facts, we can show them the difference between what Bush inherited--and squandered--and what Obama has inherited. Facts can't lie, and if we can show a completely non-biased record of the facts, they will definitely have a lot to think about.
It took 8 years to go from prosperity to a depression, and people want to reverse that. Most of them are afraid because it hasn't been reversed yet, but they are obviously thinking on an emotional level, and don't understand why things take so long. We need to show them that Obama hasn't been in office for more than 19 months, and that it's going to take awhile to clean up the messes left by pukes.
We've seen some of the shit the pukes have tried to vote down, and the people in the US need to be made fully aware of the issues, and who voted for something, and who voted against it. Right off the bat, there are two issues which should be given to the voters--the fact that pukes voted against unemployment extensions, and then again against a measure that would help out small business owners, it's pretty clear that pukes don't stand for common folk. Combine that with their plea to extend the tax cuts to even the richest 1% in the country, and it's easy to make a decisive vote.
We need to become accessible to the people of the country, and show them the stark black and white facts which the pukes have tried so hard to keep from people. And the only way we can make that happen is to get down to their level, and make them understand how the truth has been obscured for a long time. (Two terms of time, all under the worst president this country has ever seen.)
