What would Obama's approval rating be if he had demanded a stimulus package three times larger, and failed, and signed what congress passed.
And demanded a scary-strong public option. And failed, and signed what congress passed.
And demanded a sweeping government re-fi program for a trillion dollars of mortgage and consumer debt... and been unable to get it through Congress?
These are not rhetorical questions. I can argue either side.
Related question: What would these mid-terms be like if that had been the case?
Carter and Clinton appeared to be hurt by failure with Congress. Since those were our only Dem presidents since color TV their examples loom large.
But what if Obama had stated up front that he was probably going to be thwarted in these initiatives?
"I am demanding this because it is right, and if Congress does not pass this the situation will get worse. Congress will probably not pass these needed initiatives because corporate influence is too entrenched in our system, but if I did not try to do what we so desperately need I would not be doing my job for you, the people."
This approach would quite possibly have made Obama an unpopular President.
Or not.
Maybe Obama would have been Carter, maybe he would have been Truman in '48.
It's a topic for discussion. Like I said, I can argue either side.
