Steve King: ‘He’s his own man’ By Bret Hayworth - bhayworth@siouxcityjournal.com Sioux City Journal | Posted: Sunday, August 22, 2010 12:00 am
SIOUX CITY -- Steve King, outsider?
There aren’t many four-term congressmen who can effectively claim the mantle, but the Republican from Kiron, representing Iowa’s 5th congressional district, has easily positioned himself as such in an election year that seems to favor mavericks and sharp-tongued dissidents.
King has made a national name for himself by crafting controversial comments that some cheer and others find inflammatory. The C-SPAN cameras love him, and he’s a regular on FOX News and other cable news networks.Yet, he doesn’t hold a Republican U.S. House leadership position and only one bill King has sponsored has made it into law. As the former construction company owner King runs for re-election against Democrat Matt Campbell of Manning, he can still campaign as a common Iowan with common concerns.
"He's definitely an outsider. He's definitely a kind of maverick,” said Iowa State University political science professor Steffen Schmidt. “He takes on the (GOP) leadership when he has to, he has his position on issues and doesn't seem to waver on that in order to please the leadership. He's his own man in that way.”
