Because they couldn't even show it to others or brag about owning it for fear of being caught--at least one would think. I suppose if you have enough $$ you may be able to do even that. :shrug:

already waiting to add it to their "collection." There are only so many Van Goghs, Titians or Rembrandts in existence, and they are readily identifiable. Trying to steal and then sell a known art masterpiece on the open market, is the epitome of "stupid."

Remember the astonishing systematic heists of the most treasured items in the Baghdad museum and how they had been housed in hermetically sealed glass that only a pro would have had the know-how and possess the appropriate tools to cut ?
