Driveway Tax Coming in Mission, Kansas
New Tax is Effective in December

MISSION, Kan. -- Mission has adopted a new tax that will charge fees based on how much traffic specific properties generate.

The Mission City Council on Wednesday adopted a "driveway tax" as a way to raise revenue for road repairs in the Kansas City suburb.

Under the new program, every homeowner will be charged $72 a year and small businesses will pay $3,558 a year, beginning in December.

Larger businesses will pay more. For example, a Target store will pay up to $64,750 annually.

Mission officials previously said homeowners would be charged on average about $72.

City officials say the fee is expected to raise $1.2 million a year to help finance $38 million in road improvements during the next 10 years. It will also be used to fund a new express bus service between Overland Park and the Country Club Plaza.

2. This is an excellent way to discourage people from trying to run a business from their home.

3. Seems somewhat out of proportion to me
There's no way a homeowner should be charged $72 when a Target only pays $64k.

According to that formula the Target generates only as much traffic as 900 residences.

That's BS, the fee for large retail commercial businesses should be much higher.

Otherwise, not a bad concept.

4. What's the matter with Mission?
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 02:19 PM by KansDem
I drive through Mission regularly. I'd like to know what happened to the colossal "Gateway" development project? The Mission Mall was torn down in make room for this "development" but so far all that's there is a huge vacant lot. I understand it went bust...

Any Missionites want to comment?

5. So the local drug dealer has to pay how much?
Every week there is a story of a drug bust in our town of 6,000.
Every week the story is the same:
" Authorities were alerted to drug house by neighbors complaints of constant traffic in and out of the house".
