GOP Twitter blitz cites forecast of lost jobs from drilling ban
By Ben Geman - 08/23/10 11:27 AM ET

Capitol Hill Republicans hope to translate revelations that the Interior Department predicted thousands in job losses stemming from its deepwater drilling ban into political momentum against the six-month freeze.

Their strategy: Aggressive tweeting.

A substantial number of GOP members are circulating — via Twitter — a Saturday Wall Street Journal story about federal documents showing Interior predicted 23,000 temporary job losses from the moratorium.

(We blogged about the issue Saturday here and here.)

Members and GOP bodies circulating the story via Twitter include the House Republican Conference, the Senate Republican Conference, House Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio), National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas), and Reps. Kenny Marchant (Texas) and John Shimkus (Ill.).

White House officials say they’re open to lifting the ban before its late November expiration if they can ensure drilling will go forward safely.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar took aim at opponents of the ban in a Houston Chronicle op-ed Monday that touts new safeguards the agency is imposing.

“To be sure, both the deep-water drilling moratorium and the reforms we are implementing have drawn fire from the same powerful interests who have, over the last two decades, systematically fought regulation and oversight of offshore drilling operations,” Salazar wrote.

1. They should be tweeting about the jobs lost from
the oil spill. But that won't put any blood money in their pocket.

3. They don't 'really' care. I found their method of 'communication'
sort of funny, too. Ah, new technology!
