Paladino: "welfare recipients...get employment training and take lessons in "personal hygiene."
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 05:14 PM by Earth_First
GOP and tea party activist favorite for Governor in New York Carl Paladino explained his comments in Rochester today:

stating, and I quote: "I don't have to clear it up"

“A certain percentage of the people that I'm speaking to do not have those skills. And they may need help with it.”

However, what it takes is not only standing up to this smelly, corrupt poor person hater, but being vigilant about this in ALL states.

Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 06:52 PM by KittyWampus
And a good number of America's population were not taught how to dress for a job interview, show up on time for an interview, handle the interview etc etc.

This subject comes up from time to time on DU and inevitably some DU'ers who do not have a clue end up attacking remedial job training that some people actually do need.

You don't come out of the womb knowing those things. And some people aren't taught by their parents.

That doesn't mean this guy isn't an asshole. And it doesn't mean poor = dirty. But a lot of people without means do not have a nice interview outfit and work clothes, that is true.

39. Sometimes, yes.
It's unfortunate, but true.

You don't walk into a relatively conservative office for an interview dressed in a leopard print skirt and halter top. You would be surprised at how many young women think that's OK.

Or show up with bright pink hair. Or visible tattoos.

Only a couple of examples...

is indeed being "taught" those skills -- mandatory classes.

and "personal hygiene" isn't about interviewing, it's about bathing.

some du'ers don't have a clue indeed.

That bigot was implying that poor people are dirty. You will find bad personal hygiene within any class. To agree with an asshole that says otherwise is despicable.

32. You know, we could make a nice list of how well that fits in with slurs of the past.
Like, "blacks are lazy".

"Indian givers"

"Women are just golddiggers"

Yup, I'm sure we could make a very nice list that would show just how ignorant and hateful that whole "hygiene" crap is.

Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 01:13 PM by The Flaming Red Head
so I could qualify for food stamps even though I tried to explain that my class time was valuable and I was already getting job training. They taught hygiene, job skills etc and even suggested that we join a church to find a husband. What a waste of time. I stayed up all night two nights in a row just catch up from the time missed in school.

I believe we can and should create suitable housing for everyone... some people would be comfortable in a large house in the suburbs, some would be comfortable in an apartment or condo in a rehabbed old factory, I would be happy with anything right now since I live in hotels... 13. In fact, many people DO NEED TRAINING in personal hygiene, how to show up on time, be polite. It's
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 06:58 PM by KittyWampus
happened on DU several times where supposed liberals think saying this is somehow a slur.

It's a fact.

And the bubbles so many DU'ers live in don't include actual people who need these skills taught to them.

Those skills just don't manifest themselves out of nowhere. And if the parents can't or don't teach their kids, SOMEONE has to.

This is called "soft skills" and in terms of job training, it goes beyond people/communication skills and goes into stuff like grooming, comportment, schedules.

25. it *is* a slur, and your repetition of "soft skill" doesn't "soften" it.
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 08:56 PM by Hannah Bell
and for your & carl paladino's information, welfare recipients *already* have to take MANDATORY classes in resume preparation, interviewing, & a host of other skills.

As much as a full-time job's worth, depending on the state:

Step 3: Come into the office and ask for a Resource Specialist.

•They will assign you to attend Job Smart Workshops. You will need to attend 35 hours per week of the Job Smart Workshops.

https://www.worknetpinellas.org/wn/worknet_pinellas.php?f_page_id=75&f_main_page_id=13&f_sub_page_id=77

Not only that, but since the classes are only offered in designated locations, people living far from those locations (in our area, as much as 40 miles away over a mountain pass, 80 miles round-trip) ARE REQUIRED TO MAKE THAT TRIP 4 DAYS A WEEK IN THEIR WELFARE BEATER CARS, PAYING FOR GAS, CHILDCARE, ETC.

you have no frigging clue, you & carl. JUST BULLSHIT.

i'm with you on this one Kitty ... many DUers do live in nice little bubbles. i've worked with a few people over the years who really did not have, or else just did not give a fuck, about the soft skills and about hygiene! i work with community college students now, and OMG!

40. I'm one of those people...
I never realized until I was in the 8th grade and a friend told me that I should have been using underarm deodorant. Because I smelled. And to make it worse, I was a highly anxious child who sweated constantly. Rivers of sweat would pour down from my armpits. I didn't smell myself, but obviously other people did.

I didn't know we were supposed to bathe more than once a week.

My mother never said a thing.

And that's only one example...

One of the main reasons I was never taught any of this stuff was because my father was an alcoholic and the whole family drama revolved around his drinking and there was very little time or energy left over for my parents to teach us what we needed to know.

And I was still learning stuff in High School...and after that...

People need to be taught, and if they aren't, they don't know, and they get teased, ridiculed and mocked.

Anyway, thank you for pointing this out. Too many people think it's a travesty to have to learn this sort of thing outside the home, or that it's rude to acknowledge that it happens...

38. I have young employees that need to be taught these things all the time.
Believe it or not some people just aren't aware that a shower is a daily requirement when working with the public, that clothes can only be worn once or twice, that 2:30 really means 2:30, that deodorant isn't just a quaint idea on television commercials, that you actually do need to brush your teeth, and that your boss really is in charge when you're at work.

I find myself teaching young people these things more often than you might believe; the ball gets dropped at home all too often. And if the state they leave the washroom in is any indication many of them don't even know how to wipe their asses.

I can't even count the number of times I've come upon the most disgusting scenes in women's bathrooms.

Sanitary products...USED!!!....just thrown on the floor next to the toilet.

Not that I was taught how to dispose of them by my mom, either, but I did...thank goodness...read the packages to learn how to dispose of them properly. If you can't flush, wrap them up securely in TP and put into the appropriate receptacle.
