2. We're already a decade behind the rest of the world
and now these mediaeval jerkoffs want to push us back even farther?

I'm beginning to think religion should be a DISqualification for office.

Please, can we open the state mental health systems again, get these people some antipsychotics?

3. This appears to be one of the pitfalls of unilateral executive action
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 06:32 PM by tritsofme
The president can only do so much without getting actual legislation out of Congress. An executive order cannot overwrite the law, and this was a limitation on their strategy. Stopping the Dickey Amendment is the only serious way to open up federal funding for stem cell research.

4. Who the fuck's talking about the president?
I'm talking ab out the knucklehead judge who gave the injunction. It reminds of the movie from the 1940's where Virginia goes to court there is a Santa Claus. The movie is a classic. Siding with religiocrazies, not so much.

5. It is my understanding that the injunction is because federal law contradicts the executive order.

The "Dickey Amendment" bans federal dollars from funding research that destroys human embryo. There is a good chance the injunction will stand.

Just as the so called "Hyde Amendment" is attached to appropriation bills each year to ban federal funding of abortion, the Dickey Amendment attached to appropriation bills each year similarly bans much federal stem cell research.

The real solution is for Congress to kill the Dickey Amendment. An actual change to the law accomplishes what the president is incapable of by just the stroke of his pen.
