My first thought was that opposition to interracial marriage is only racist when the opposition is for overtly racist reasons, i.e. reasons predicated on beliefs about the inferiority of one race or another. But the more I think about it, the more I conclude that ANY arguments based solely on racial differences MUST included some measure of racial contempt, or at least I couldn't find any reasonable ones that don't, so I'm left with acknowledging that any plausible arguments are likely racist arguments.

And by extension, opposition to homosexual marriage must be founded upon homophobia. Again, every argument I can think of to justify it ultimately rests upon assumptions about relative human value that have NOTHING to do with marriage.

18. By its own definition it is- how can it be otherwise? Individuals can...

by attracted to, or not be attracted to, others for many reasons, some of them possibly racist, others not. But to attempt to deny others the right to marry their choices, or to claim there is something inherently wrong with those choices, has to be racist when the choice is race.

What else could it be?

Having said that, I don't extend the same rationale to being against gay marriage, although it is, as the law now reads, a terrible discrimination to not allow it. Personally, I'm not a big fan of marriage for anyone because its only historical purpose was to legitimize paternity--something that's now a rather quaint concept. Quaint as it may be, though, it's absurd when dealing with two people of the same sex adopting. Or, a single woman, regardless of sexual preference, getting artificially inseminated.

Since marriage has become a complex minefield of legal rights and responsibilities, probably more significant in the long run than any starry-eyed honeymoon, I think a separate state FULLY legally equivalent to marriage is needed. And not just for gay couples-- what about someone unmarried and unrelationshipped who needs someone to handle his or her affairs and be able to sign the avalanche of papers that sometimes have to be signed?

The French have adopted exactly that. I can't remember the name-- something like refrerement. A person you have designated to have all the rights and whatever that a spouse would have, but with no sexual connotation.
