Local universities to push for more international students

A new partnership of 11 college and university campuses wants to increase international student enrollment and retention by 10 percent in the next five years.

GlobalPittsburgh today announced it has formed a consortium called the GlobalPittsburgh Education Partnership.

The campuses that have signed on so far are Carlow University, Chatham University, Community College of Allegheny County, Duquesne University, La Roche College, three Penn State campuses (Beaver, Greater Allegheny and New Kensington), Robert Morris University, Washington & Jefferson College and West Virginia University.

"We plan to use GlobalPittsburgh's resources to raise the visibility of the region's outstanding educational opportunities around the world, and also to help engage incoming students and their families once they arrive in the region," said Roger Cranville, president of GlobalPittsburgh, in a news release.

Using GlobalPittsburgh's CONNECT program, international students -- as well as professionals and families -- can participate in various events, including dinners with American hosts.

Mr. Cranville said that GlobalPittsburgh also has connections at U.S. and foreign embassies and consulates that can help to promote local education programs.

Some participants in the partnership have met with ambassadors from Vietnam, the Republic of Georgia and Nigeria.

About 7,000 international students attend college in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, most of whom go to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.

1. I'm kind of uneasy about this. When it is so hard for Americans to pay for college

are we then going to get fill the seats with foreign students that can afford to pay?

from the cradle to the grave if you qualify.

Our way of life doesn't allow such wishful thinking, or even those other things like universal single payer healthcare.

So the universities are marketing to the highest bidder. They would charge more to US students (and accept more), but are politically prevented from doing so, even as state budgets keep dwindling.
