Met a tea bagger today at the County Fair Dem booth.
He came to the booth to tell me that Kirsten Gillibrand and Scott Murphy are traitors and because of them he can't carry his gun wherever he would like.Five seconds later he moved on to an anti Muslim rant. He was loud, rude and really angry. Plus, he was standing way too close to me. By the time he got to "In 20 years women in this country won't have any rights because we will have sharia law" I had had quite enough. I asked him to leave the booth when he got to the "Obama is a Muslim" part of his rant. And I must confess I am glad he can't carry a concealed weapon, he's unhinged from too much Limbaugh and Co. And call me cynical but I don't think he gives a rat's ass about women's rights. I would have talked to him for as long as he liked except there was no actual conversation, he shouted in my face so really, what would be the point in continuing the unpleasantness?

Ugh.

2. No he wasn't.
He looked like he was going to have a coronary. I wasn't worried though, lots of first aid at the fair.

3. I'll take that bet. Teabaggers are largely too dumb to have a sense of humor.
Had too many of those fools in my face recently to give them a lot of credit for ANY social skills.

10. Nah Brick, they are just that stupid
Trying to imagine that it is some half baked Machiavellian plot is just giving them far too much credit. They aren't capable of thinking up such a thing and are less capable of carrying it out if they did.

9. Both Kirsten Gillibrand and Scott Murphy got an A rating from the NRA.
If you remember, I worked for him during last year's special election and got that question from some one-issue voters. Gillibrand really is pro-gun, and Scott Murphy took on her positions, so also got credit for that...

And some people really are crazy. I also got called all sorts of names, "treehugger" being the nicest. One senior citizen called me back on the day before the election when I was just leaving flyers on doors with polling places on them. She was very upset by a Tedisco worker that had come to her door and went off on her because she'd already voted absentee for Murphy. This young woman said that Scott Murphy was "a nazi." WTF?! My senior citizen was very upset and wanted to report it...

Then there was the guy (on my list) who yelled for me to get off his property and almost ran me over with his car. I'm so sorry that you had to deal with that. Sometimes you just have to walk away... :(

12. Lots of very nice people came by the booth.
And lots of normal questions/comments too. Willful ignorance is beyond discouraging though especially when wrapped up with the vitriol he was spewing. When all civil discourse is lost it will be a very sad day for America.

13. That part of it is a lot of fun.
Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 08:52 PM by Rhiannon12866
I enjoyed talking with people who were interested and answering their questions. I got a lot of senior citizens and they were great, take this stuff seriously and we even arranged to give those who needed it a ride to the polls. :)

But the crazy scary people can really make the experience unpleasant. Fortunately, they're in the minority and I mostly got called names over the phone. The frightening thing is that there will probably be more like the guy you met who feel empowered by the inciting influence of the likes of O'Reilly and BecKKK... :( :pals:

21. I witnessed something similar
I was at my county fair last year, and was right next to the democrat booth. It was nice to have people to talk to when it was slow. I did see lots of people come over and have productive discourse. That is, except for those manning the republican booth. They were paranoid and ran over to blame the democrats for anything that happened at their booth. "Did you knock down our sign?"

It's amazing, really, how people can be so closed minded that they cling to their misguided beliefs like a life line. You can always spot those when they start personally attacking you when you provide evidence contrary to their beliefs.

This is what I have been talking about on another thread. I think that we are heading towards something that will not end well.

16. How is it that so many people here run into crazy right wingers on a
regular basis? I go through weeks at work and at home without hearing about anyone's (strangers) political leanings.

17. I was standing in the County Democratic booth.
He sought me out. :-)
Normally I don't run into that sort of thing. When it happens it is rather startling.
