FW: Social Security for Illegal Aliens

Following is a list of 547 people who signed a petition asking President Bush not to sign a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to collect social security. Given that the government does not give social security numbers to illegal immigrants -- if the government did, they wouldn't be illegal -- such a law is an obvious impossibility. But someone told these people such a bill was passed, and the people on this list were stupid enough to believe it.

Please forward this on to everyone you know. It may save someone you know from making the mistake of relying on one of these individuals for something important that requires at least an ounce of common sense.

The original text of the petition has been deleted. We don't know why these people decided to "sign" this petition, or if they even exist. The Immigration Reform Bill that passed in the Senate last year DID allow illegal immigrants to collect money they had paid into Social Security, presumably through illegally obtained numbers.
But yeah, online petitions are stupid in general.

The Immigration Reform Bill would let these people stay here as guest workers. As guest workers they would be issued a social security number. They would then be entitled to receive the benefits for which they paid thereafter.

There was NOTHING, NADA, NIL, ZILCH in that bill about getting the benefits they paid for while working illegally.

For that matter, it would be impossible for them to receive the benefits they paid for prior to that. Do you seriously believe the gov't has a program in place for reporting/tracking benefits that have been paid for/accrued by illegal aliens?

It is bad enough the people listed above didn't even think this through. But you're making this argument after I pointed out that these people don't have a social security number the gov't could have used for tracking this information which makes the whole concept IMPOSSIBLE.

If someone has been working for years paying social security using YOUR social security number, guess who is going to get those social security numbers? YOU!!! If I wasn't already maxed out on SSI contributions I would be thrilled to learn that someone has been contributing on my behalf.

And about S.B. 2611-- it would have made it so that people who are currently illegal could get legal status and then get credit for work done as illegal aliens. Sure, they don't have valid SSI numbers. But they can still provide "proof" that they were living here and working. Heck, that's part of the process for getting legal status in the first place!

Validity of SSN is based not just on number but on number and matching name.

Those on invalid SSN go into a suspense account and employers are notified. Those notification letters SHOULD inform employer that employee is possibly illegal alien. Some employers get HUNDREDS of such letters/notices ... and don't bother to do anything.
Sometimes credits are applied to valid SSN ... and people either don't notice extra credits or they could actually gain a 'refund' for excess when filing federal taxes or, when the extra still doesn't exceed max, just 'give thanks' and let the credits apply. Since the validity is based on correct name and matching SSN, it's open to speculation whether there's collusion ... and somebody might be getting 'laundered' money.
