A retired Presbyterian minister was found guilty Friday by a special commission of her own church of officiating the marriage of same-sex couples in 2008 and will be censured by rebuke.
The six-member panel announced it verdict around noon in the case of the Rev. Jane Spahr, 68, of San Francisco, who was accused of violating church law in 16 ceremonies, including the marriage of a gay Santa Rosa couple.
Her lawyer, Scott Clark, said he will launch an appeal to stay the official rebuke, which amounts to the reading of the judicial commission's findings at a public meeting.
“We were, of course, disappointed with the decision,” Clark said. “The church had the opportunity to recognize the dignity of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples and it fell short.”

"This is such a sad moment for the Church," Spahr, a minister for 36 years and a lesbian activist, said in a written statement. "Today, the Church rejected God's amazing hospitality and welcome. It deeply troubles and saddens me."
