Charlie Crist supports constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage
Edited on Sun Aug-29-10 04:26 PM by terrya
HENRY: But governor, doesn't it sounds like you having it both ways by saying live and let live, but I also support a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. If it's live and let live, why would you ban same-sex marriage?

CRIST: Well, everything is in a matter of degree, Ed, and when it becomes to the institution of marriage, I believe that it is between a man and a woman, it's just how I feel.

Or, apparently, between a closeted gay man and his beard. Having just watched "8 - A Mormon Proposition" last night, about the history of California's testament to hate, Proposition 8, I'm had it with this bullshit. Whatever tiny promise Crist had in running as an independent and seemingly repudiating the crap of the Republican Party, he just lost me here. The legacy of Ken Mehlman continues.

1. I don't worry much about the politicians who cry this marriage amendment.
Edited on Sun Aug-29-10 04:35 PM by napi21
I firmly believe within the next 1-2 years at most, the SCOTUS will rule those laws unconstitutional, and all those who were arguing for those laws will just have to grumble & cry in their beer.

7. You've got an optimistic timeline
There are only two cases that came through the Federal courts right now, one is the Massachusetts case that challenge only one part of DOMA, the part that says that the Federal government cannot treat same-gender marriages as equal to heterosexual marriages when it comes to benefits and rights. The part about states that have a ban on equal marriage being able to treat a same-gender couple who moves from an equality state is not part of the suit.

The most recent California case may not make it past the 9th Circuit. If the 9th rules that the Prop H8 defenders have no standing, and California remains firm on not pressing the matter, the Walker decision merely makes CA the next state to allow equal marriage, and it goes no further,

10. There's another case that's expected to get to the SCOTUS.
Sorry, I don't remember much about it, but it was discussed at the same time everyone was talking about the Calif. case MAYBE going all the way. The feelings in the legal commnity were that this other case might get to the SC first because it's already farther along in the legal process.

I'm inclined to think that the California case will be heard by the 9th circuit. I could be all wrong, but I believe if the 9th was going to reject it because of standing, the 3 judge panel would have already done so, and no refer it to the second panel. I suspect we'll know if that's right by sometime in December.

13. If there's another case out there headed for the SCOTUS
Edited on Sun Aug-29-10 08:18 PM by customerserviceguy
I must have missed it. Frankly, I hope it takes quite a few years for this to happen, I don't have a lot of faith in the current composition of the Court on this issue. In fact, I'm so cynical, I think that Ted Olson is rushing this through to make sure that the current Court gets to make a ruling against equal marriage that will last for a generation.

2. politics of the real
Crist can not say he is gay or that he supports gay marriage ..... Gay Marriage will be the law of the land
it is not a matter of if but when.

Crist and others must be elected so when judges 3,4, and maybe 5 are picked by President Obama gay rights (I hate that term) ..... civil rights
will be the law of the land

5. Have you seen Outrage?
They spend some time on Crist as well. It takes a twisted psychology to act that way.

6. Yeah, I saw "Outrage"
It's a very good look at closeted Republicans (although, the same dynamic could be applied to closeted Democrats) who pursue an anti-gay agenda. Crist has left a nasty legacy as Florida governor....Amendment 2, one of the most regressive anti-gay marriage bans in the country, plus a ban on gay and lesbian couples from adopting.

12. What few people realize, it that in FL it takes 60% to repeal
an amendment.
In CA, Prop 8 passed on the same day Amendment 2 passed in FL. Given the shift in voter attitudes, it is likely Prop 8 could be overturned in 2010 or 2012 by vote.

In FL, that day will likely not ever come in my lifetime...because we would need 60% favorable. SCOTUS is our only hope.

:sarcasm:

In the reality-based world, the real Dem, Kendrick Meek, has now closed to within nine points of Crist.

17. I think a lot of DUers have been fooled by Crist's "moderate" image
I've been saying for years that Crist will say and do anything to advance his political career. This is the same man, who when he was Florida's Attorney General, earned the nickname "Chain Gang Charlie" for his fondness of prison chain gangs. He might not be as far-right as Marco Rubio and the Tea Party idiots - but that's more of a statement on Rubio, not Crist. Crist is a conservative, make no mistake about it. His entire stint as Florida governor has simply been a stepping stone to further his career. Thus, he made himself look like a moderate to attract independent and "moderate" Democrats. But now that he's running for Senate, you'll start to see him swinging back to the conservative side.

Simply put, he's a man who will say anything to anyone, and cannot be trusted at all.

19. You are so right, and it will be really interesting
to see how he tries to navigate between right and left here.
And it would not surprise me to see Rubio get really nasty (read: play the homo card) with Crist.
