What is being described as a low-level emergency classification at the Vermont Yankee power plant put the surrounding towns on alert tonight. Vermont Yankee spokesman Larry Smith said a loss of power to electrical circuits in the plant alarm center led to the plant declaring a "unusual event" at 7:05 p.m. Smith described the classification as the lowest of four emergency classifications established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He said maintenance and engineering technicians were addressing the problem and expected the status to be lifted by late tonight.
