Does anyone else wonder how so many of these threads keep getting hijacked by Mormon-bashers? What ever happened to you celebrate your religion and I’ll celebrate mine? This mud fight is getting ridiculous! If a person wants to worship a tree—that’s his own businss!! We need to pray for these people who have nothing else to do.

Probably because the article is about a Mormon pretending to be a Christian. It is highly offensive to those who are Christians to be associated with heretics, who up until recently had the decency to insist on that separation. Somwhere recently, LDS has decided to attack the Church and target the weaker of the faith for their indoctrination.

The concept of "you celebrate your religion and I'll celebrate mine" is akin to watching your neighbor's home burn down with them in it and rationalizing to yourself that its none of your business to initiate a rescue...

Seems to me the people in attendance, who were prohibited to bring their own signs, didn't really have much in common with the love fest they were bussed to. This re-branding of Beck will surely have repercussions within the TeaBagger movement. There were very few happy faces in that crowd. It would have been interesting to interview attendees before and after. Before to get expectations, and after to see if said expectations were met.

They have problems with Catholics, but for the most part will at least accept them as Christian. The problem they have is that Mormonism claims to be "Christian" yet it has big doctrinal clashes with established Christianity.

Because of this it needs to be pointed out at every opportunity that Beck is a Mormon. That will keep the evangelicals all worked up and Beck will have to deal with that as opposed to spreading lies and hate.

I wonder if some of them think that Beck's mormonism is influencing the rhetoric? I lived in Utah, worked in Utah, had friends who were mormon, have family who are mormon--very, very pro-business and secret ceremony, secret handshake type of thing. And, there are generational mormons I believe think that they should not associate with "gentiles" and I believe one thing that got them driven out of Missouri is that some of the leaders (not necessarily Smith) believed that since their neighbors were gentiles it was alright to steal from them or whatever because they are not worthy.

And, those who are converted the furthest away from Utah, some have no clue of how much the church invades into your life-deciding family matters and how much you should be tithing to the church. They are a big influence in voting in Utah.

Does Beck's faith influence his rhetoric? Probably.

He then segues to Pilgrims, but it is clear that he is talking about the Nephites just before that.

EthicsDaily.com reports that the pastor of the largest Baptist church in Spartanburg, S.C., first endorsed Romney and recently retracted the endorsement, calling it a "personal mistake," while a prominent colleague in Texas is quoted as saying, "Even though he talks about Jesus as his Lord and Savior, he is not a Christian... Mormonism is a cult." EthicsDaily.com implies that the Texan's position may be out of date, since SBC documents that had previously listed the faith under a "cults and sects" section have moved it to a "newly developed religions" page.

But Land's comment seems to go a step further. A cult, he said on the Bloomberg show, "is a form of faith which does not comply with the essential teachings of the Christian faith but claims to be within the Christian faith or to be the true expression of the Christian faith, as opposed to being another religion like Judaism." Land explained that he would look at Mormonism "as another faith in the same sense that I would look upon Islam as another faith. I think the fairest and most charitable way to define Mormonism would be to call it the fourth Abrahamic religion — Judaism being the first, Christianity being the second, Islam being the third, and Mormonism being the fourth. And Joseph Smith would play the same character in Mormonism that Muhammad plays in Islam."

This raises all sorts of interesting questions. One, is it a promotion or a demotion? "Abrahamic religion" sounds a lot grander than "cult." However, Land also seems to suggest that Mormonism is no more Christian than is Islam....

to the public, prior to its dedication. My brother and I went and took a tour. We're construction workers and wanted to check out the design and craftsmanship that we had been hearing about. It was very impressive. While we were in the building, some fundies had set up a picket at the entrance/exit. A guy tried handing me a flier and I said no thanks. He noticed my union sticker and said that I would understand, since I was union. I told him that I understood the first amendment and that it applies to him, me and the Mormons.
