NY legislators want chickens vaccinated

NEW YORK – Two state legislators want to require farmers in New York to vaccinate their chickens against salmonella.

Sen. Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh announced their proposal Sunday in front of a supermarket in New York City. Their idea comes after a nationwide recall of hundreds of millions of eggs. None of the recalled eggs came from New York.

The legislators say vaccinations costing one penny per dozen eggs could nearly eliminate the more than 100,000 salmonella cases each year in the U.S. if all states had such a law.

They plan to formally introduce the legislation this week.

5. I buy pastured eggs from a farmer. Maybe 50 cents more for a dozen than at Stop & Shop

And I live in the middle of Boston. The "added cost" is that I can only buy the one day a week the farmer is in town, and I'm willing to pay that.

The result, their eggs are not a source of likely Samonella poisoning.

This also might explain that fact that in both England and Spain, I had difficulty finding the eggs at local stores when staying in timeshares - they are not refrigerated and don't need to be. (Our British friend was surprised at me then - without thought - putting them in out refrigerator.)

Imagine letting your kids eat the chocolate chip cookie batter from the mixer. I always did as a kid - and always told my kids they could get sick. Imagine making homemade mayonnaise without concern.

I do both. Because I buy eggs from pastured chickens and don't store them for weeks.

I have bought eggs from pastured chickens just because it seems more humane and healthier.

11. For a half second I read that as "pasteurized chickens"...

...which would be a scary concept. :)
