6. Until relatively recently, all Christian women were expected to cover their heads.
Sarah Palin would have been stoned as a harlot 300 years ago, for walking around with an uncovered head. Even those patriotic founding fathers would have looked down on her as a low class woman for doing so.

Millions of Christian women, even today, still obey the order in Corinthians that they dress demurely and cover their heads.

Heck, this was the standard head covering for peasant Christian women in England in the 1300's. Look familiar?

7. Do you call the 1300s "relatively recently"?
I was raised Christian in the fifties and sixties and the only time I had to wear anything on my head was in church..and now, even that's gone.

Illustrations and photos of Americans and Europeans -- both predominately Christian -- will tell you that no 24/7 head covering has been required for at least the last three hundred years.

10. That's not the Middle Ages, bro..
that's not even 300 years ago..It's about one and a half centuries and their numbers are SO small that they're statiscally quite insignificant.

Maybe you're trying for some kind of Christian-Muslim "equivalence" here, but it doesn't work...Too long of a reach.

I was just thinking, hey wait, I sometimes see those women with those little white hats on. I saw some the other day. Had to ask my wife what they were called - I thought they were pentecostal, but they apparently they just can't wear pants.

17. With pasta strainers?
Down here in GA, the Mennonite women wear a small sieve on top of the hair that is put up in a bun. Bigger than a juice sieve, but not enough for two servings of pasta. Again, I defer to Prof. Carlin for the best explanation of religious headgear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FKOVFyd3nc

12. "the only time I had to wear anything on my head was in church"
Exactly. Women were supposed to wear hats to church.

As an interpretation of that old testament verse about women covering their heads.

And before that, women wore hats in public all the time.

16. No. Reread that post.
I merely offered that photo up as an example of our English ancestors being a bunch of proto-jihadi terrorists.

And, for what it's worth, you're dead wrong on head coverings in America. Paintings and photos of women, until relatively recently in history, generally portrayed only upper class or aristocratic women. Those women, in America, typically belonged to a handful of faiths that had relaxed rules about covering their heads. Most Americans, who were immigrants from nations other than England, didn't accept these relaxed beliefs and continued to cover their heads.

If you look for photos and paintings of "commoner" or "peasant" women taken before 1900, that were NOT studio portraits, and were NOT taken in their homes (women didn't cover their heads inside their own houses, just as Muslim women don't today) you'll find that more than half covered their heads on a daily basis anyway, and the further back you go, the higher the percentage...it started falling off pretty quickly in the 1800's. Depending on their faith, many wore hats, some wore bonnets, and many others simple cloth scarves, but the head was covered when you were out in public. For most American women, the headcovering has only fallen by the wayside in the last century, eliminated by both a general feminist rejection of "demure" clothing as a sign of inferiority, and because having cloth headcoverings could be risky in early industrial settings (became an issue as women entered the workforce).

Men ALSO wore hats up until the early 1960's...and some still do!

P.S. I have photos of many of my "commoner" female ancestors from before the 1900's..No "head coverings"...Sorry.

23. Read what you were told again
300 years ago is not 900 years ago.

And in historic terms, 300 years is relatively recent.

<------------ Historian by training.

Also about 100 years ago women were still wearing "modestly," and some were even covering their heads.

That was common in the Victorian age for middle and upper class demure women. No, not quite a religious habit...

But still following that.

And there are women that even today wear head coverings, even if their numbers are really small these days.

And last, but not least -- what part of "Men wore hats too" don't you understand?

35. Yes they did and...
your point?

People DID wear head dress and many of them for religious reasons. Some, in fact, still do.

That does not mean anybody is making any false equivalences.

By the way today those who wear a hat or head cover for religious reasons ARE a minority...

At least in the west.

But it is a fact, people did. ESPECIALLY when going to Friday Service if they were\ are Jewish. or Sunday Service if they were\ in many cases still are Christian.

Have a good day.

And YES people INCLUDES women, and NOBODY IS DOING ANY FUCKING EQUIVALENCE, EXCEPT YOU.

Some people cannot take it that perhaps they might be wrong.

And yes MY MOTHER wore, still wears a head dress when going to Temple. She is Jewish... I am Jewish... you are telling me that this did not happen?

JEEESUS AGE, there are days.

SHEESH!

Now three people did not get what you meant... three people told you so... perhaps it was you.
