anyone following Hurricane Earl closely?
Just learned that my nephew is on St. Thomas for a business meeting and government employees were sent home at noon and he is hunkered down in a hotel with a couple bottles of water and some power bars.

3. Hopefully it will not do much
and your nephew (and everybody else) will be safe when all is said and done. (Oh and I hope the hotel has the emergency rations too)

8. Very large hurricane. Currently expected not to hit any populated areas.
But the predicted path has been edging westward. If it hits South Carolina as a Cat 4 or 5, it would be quite deadly, I'm afraid. It's currently forecast to turn northward and miss the US coast. Unfortunately it's also forecast to hit Nova Scotia, but probably at a pretty reduced power after traveling over colder waters on the way.

10. Yes.
I live on the NC coast so I'm following it. Hopefully the most we'll get from it is some great waves for the surfers.

12. I am. Was thinking of going to the OBX this weekend.
Guess that plan is out. Also getting the rations together. Last hurricane to brush the NC/VA coast had our power out for 7 days. Really sucks when you can't even shower or flush without the power on. (well water)
