187. The bushes still run the country
Obama says what he has to say. A frequent commenter on another site lived in Yugoslavia before and after Tito. Says Tito had more autonomy than our leaders and Great Britain's today. Saw the very same thing happen there that is going on here. Huge attempts to start race/religion/class wars to divide the people.WE are in the cross hairs.

No, I don't think bush cared about the troops or anybody for that matter. Used to see the same behavior on psychiatric units all the time.

to send troops for what turned out to be a war over natural resources, resources that belonged to the Iraqi's. Imagine a country invading us, using an excuse like WMD's to take resources from us while enriching too-large-to-fail companies... funny how people don't seem to be able to imagine themselves being others. Lack of a conscience is why...

Between the Iraq invasion/occupation, Gitmo, Abu Gharib, and, most importantly, bringing fake turkeys to the troops for Thanksgiving dinner photo-ops, I have some SERIOUS questions/concerns about Bush's love for the troops and our country.

*For the record, I believe that Obama does too but that he *had* to say otherwise- speaking about a fellow POTUS.

63. Checking in. If Bush gave a shit about the troops, he wouldn't have lied them
into a phony war, given them substandard equipment, dirty water, unsafe housing, cheated them out of necessary medical care, short-changed them on the GI Bill, and he would have gotten rid of DADT. If he'd cared about the country, he wouldn't have assaulted the Constitution, driven us into a financial hole to enrich his buddies, and done nothing while New Orleans drowned.

I can understand that it's a matter of decorum for Presidents to not speak ill of their predecessors, but in this case, President Obama is showing stinkingly poor judgment by adhering to that custom. If he can't bring himself to openly acknowledge Bush's crimes, he should STFU. Unmerited praise of Bush make Obama look like an idiot at best and a co-conspirator at worst.

70. What shocks me is that Robert Gibbs dismisses the "professional left"
and seems to be trying to kick progressives out of the party one week, and just a couple of weeks later, Obama is saying kind things about Bush in a major nationally broadcast speech. Which side are they are on? Whose friends are they? Has someone promised them millions when they leave the White House (millions as in the millions that Clinton has been paid for being so kind to Wall Street when he was in office)?

Who can we get to run against Obama in 2012? Who will not be corrupted once he or she gets to the White House? Is there one honest person who could conceivably win?

join forces on a single alternative "Democratic wing of the Democratic Party" ticket and launch a "no bullshit" campaign to counter the DLC run establishment. All they'd have to do is stick to the truth and they'd do fine. When people hear Obama praise the worst President in history, it doesn't do anything to inspire confidence. It just makes them wonder whose side he's on.

didn't hurl vast quantities of undigested material when he uttered those words.

Bush didn't and doesn't give a rat's ass about the the troops or the nation; outside of his corporate supremacist worshiping, mega wealthy base.

Bush was a corrupt, incompetent usurper; coming to power via coup and willing to abandon the people of a drowning city to his own pettiness, fear and hatred, I view Obama's praise of Bush as a shame on Obama.

Thanks for the thread, rug.

81. AWOL Bush has NO LOVE for the troops or the U.S.
That being said, I do believe that President Obama HAD to mention him in that speech as a political move.

the idiot freeptard tea bagging "mainstream media" was clammering for Obama to throw AWOL Bush a bone and they would have torn him to shreds today and all this week over it if he hadn't done it.

I think our President's speech was outstanding and I give him ALL THE CREDIT for ending the war in Iraq. It should have NEVER BEEN WAGED TO BEGIN WITH!!!!

88. Asking whether Bush loves the troops is kind of like asking...
...whether the toothless, heroin-abusing hobo your daughter brought home as a boyfriend loves her. He probably does.

Bush undoubtedly considers himself to be in that hallowed "band of brothers" one gets to be in by fighting for the country. Bush loves his brothers. He didn't like fighting so much, but at least he had the wardrobe.

116. Laura Bush "No one suffered more than 'George' did during the war".
BUSH's TRAIL of MISERY

The Bushes are a consistent clan. From Barbara Bush's 'beautiful mind' comment to Laura's mindless statement saying her husband suffered more than all of our soldiers is just too much. She actually believes her husband suffered more than the 33,000 mutilated soldiers who lost limbs, eyes, mobility and their spirits.

And Laura Bush believes her psychopathic husband suffered more than the almost 5,000 soldiers who died, not to mention the tens of thousands of relatives and friends of the fallen soldiers, each of whom had their hearts broken forever. And Laura Bush thinks her husband suffered more than the hundreds of thousands of slaughtered and injured Iraqi citizens.

From one end of the Bush clan to the other there is one consistent thread, a soullessness and heartlessness only shared by sociopaths and psychopaths. The trail of misery left by evil people like Bush stretches from all of those human beings who had their lives ended or forever changed by Bush's wars to the savage and inhumane economic war against the most vulnerable people in our country.

I never thought such evil could ever ascend to the highest positions in our government. And the same kind of conservative republicans want to continue Bush's assaults against their fellow countrymen, even wanting to start new wars abroad.

When will democratic leaders find the courage to tell the truth about the enemies within our own borders and when will they begin to fight back?

In this instance, I have no doubt.

Nope, he never cared. I'm a former active duty nurse, was married to a vet who went to Iraq and Afghanistan, and am thoroughly grateful that my son, who goes on active duty later this month, will have as his Commander-in-Chief a man who deserves that title. I think he was wrong to say what he did about Bush, but he does deserve the title much more.

175. He loves all the people he gave a nickname.
He was the nicknamer in chief.

Much as I despise everything that his administration wrought, I think GWB's primary failing was that he was clueless. He may have felt love for the troops, but that didn't mean he wasn't willing to send them off to fight a pointless and foolish war. I think he got suckered into the neocon cause and then went into denial when the WMD magically disappeared. As for love of country, he turned the country over to "his base"- the have mores- and never did figure out that they used the wars and de-regulation to engage in an orgy of looting.

Doesn't make him a bad man...just a catastrophically inept president.

He loves Jim Beam, winning, and probably his family.

He has to Cheerlead the troops, otherwise they would rightfully bear arms against him & his traitoris family.
