Some say that Alan Simpson may have accidentally leaked Republican plans to use death panels to cut aid to ailing veterans, if they are able to gain enough seats in Congress in the mid-term elections. According to unconfirmed rumors, Republican strategists think this would be more palatable than introducing them directly into the Medicare program, since veterans signed up for the military knowing they might have to die for the country. Still, one anonymous internet poster who claimed to have inside knowledge about the plan, said that if it worked at the VA, the Republicans would try the same thing with Medicare and Social Security: they would give recipients a choice of rejecting the monthly payments or dying. In fact, according to this poster, the accusations about Death Panels against Democrats were all part of a plan to get the public used to the idea, and to put them in the position of saying that the Democrats were going to do it too.
Of course, none of these rumors have been confirmed by any reliable source, but none of the Republicans allegedly involved in the plot have denied it. Sarah Palin and other Republican leaders have remained strangely silent over the issue, though John McCain is rumored to have written to the Pentagon requesting that any VA benefits he is receiving be cut off immediately. Naturally, we would take them at their word if they denied this plot, but so far they have not.
