O'Donnell backer makes sex charge in Delaware race

A conservative firm until recently employed by the Delaware primary campaign of conservative Christine O'Donnell against Rep. Mike Castle casually leveled an extraordinary — and unsupported — charge of a gay affair against Castle in a video posted to its website today, the ugliest salvo yet in an extremely bitter primary.

The newscast-style video on Liberty.com features a woman seated before a backdrop of Liberty.com's Las Vegas headquarters, criticizing Castle and praising O'Donnell.

"Isn't Mike Castle cheating on his wife with a man?" asks a voice off-screen at the 1:55 mark.

"That's the rumor," answers the newscaster. (A short clip of the exchange is above.)

My colleague Dave Catanese reported earlier this month that O'Donnell's spokesman, Yates Walker, works for Liberty.com, and the American Spectator described Eric Odom, the group's founder, as having "joined Team O'Donnell" to organize online support.

Walker told me he and the firm left the campaign two weeks ago and produced the video on their own.

"We asked the question, we didn't specifically say it," he said of the gay affair charge, which he said was "common knowledge" in Delaware. "We thought we'd throw it out there."

Walker said he had no compunction about repeating the rumor about Castle because "he's a threat to American sovereignty."

He didn't offer any evidence for the claim.

O'Donnell campaign manager Matt Moran didn't immediately respond to a call for comment.

Castle campaign manager Mike Quaranta didn't comment on the substance of the attack, but said in an e-mail:

"Sadly these are the types of gutter tactics that voters in Delaware have come to expect from Christine O'Donnell and her out-of-state supporters."

edited to add: I don't support Mike Castle, but I think these kinds of attacks are wrong. It plays into the bigots hands. I always enjoy watching the repugs eat their own, but not at the expense of using attacks that would imply a lifestyle is wrong. And that's what this does. The "oh no he might be gay" thing, it's another way of saying being gay is wrong.

1. I'm not worried about internecine warfare in the Republican ranks
But if they're using their despicable tactics against each other, it may just be possible that Republicans will get sick of this nonsense. As it is, there are sizable segments of Republicans who cheer any scurrilous rumor as long as it's directed against Democrats. Truth doesn't matter, only the smear. If Republican Mike Castle is the target of this kind of bullshit, maybe (just maybe) more Republicans will get disgusted with the Atwater/Brown/Rove school of political mudslinging and call a halt to it. I have to say I'm not hopeful, but it could happen.

2. Coming from a tax-cheat, campaign funds scammer who preaches abstinence and lives with her boyfriend

Which btw, has been verified as the truth except she says the boyfriend is her campaign manager. Yeah right!

I can't wait to have a woman who made $5,000 last year, owes $10k in back taxes, had her house foreclosed in mortgage, owes thousands of dollars in campaign debt and defrauds her campaign by claiming her rental is her campaign office (uses campaign funds to pay rent) to go to DC and clean up the finanical mess that 'Obama created' (and I use quotes because that was Bush's mess).

Mind you, I know there are alot of RL people who only make $5k a year, perhaps owe back taxes and have lost their homes to foreclosure but to people like Christine O'Donnell - those people are scum living all of the government teat.

Oh and she runs for office every 2 years because Jesus told her too.

5. Mike Castle
I was born and raised in Delaware and it was well known of his sexual preference. I live in Florida and we all wish Charlie Crist would just come out, let the Republicans eat their own. Charlie flip flops like crazy down here but Mike Castle was Governor and Senator and Delawareans seem to like him. I saw her on tv last night and she is a piece of work. Yikes, makes Palin look good.
