Tony Blair says did not foresee Iraq "nightmare"
Tony Blair says did not foresee Iraq "nightmare"
By Karolina Tagaris
LONDON | Wed Sep 1, 2010 10:27am EDT

(Reuters) - Former British prime minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday he could have not have imagined what he called the "nightmare" that unfolded in Iraq but still did not regret joining the U.S.-led invasion.

In a political memoir Blair echoed previous statements that the 2003 invasion was justified because Saddam Hussein posed a threat and could have developed weapons of mass destruction.

The self-penned volume "A Journey" was published on the day the United States formally ended combat operations in Iraq after a conflict that claimed more than 100,000 deaths, most of them civilians.

Blair, 57, said he felt "desperately sorry" for the lives cut short, but said the mistaken belief that Saddam was hiding weapons of mass destruction was an "understandable error."

"I can't regret the decision to go to war ... I can say that never did I guess the nightmare that unfolded," said Blair, referring to the years of political and sectarian bloodshed in Iraq that followed the invasion.

unhappycamper comment: F**k you, Tony.

3. It was not an "understandable error"..
... many people who had the ability to know (Hans Blix, Scott Ritter) told you there were no WMD. No it is was not an "understandable error", it was a convenient excuse.

10. But lots of people DID guess!
Edited on Thu Sep-02-10 06:54 AM by LeftishBrit
I remember the day of the invasion, my Mum said this was 'striking a match near a powder keg'.

Britain was overwhelmingly against going to war. A large number of secondary school children in Oxford immediately took to the streets to demonstrate.

Maybe one of them should have been PM instead of the self-deluded, walking disaster area, Tony Blair. Who might have guessed what would happen if he'd taken a good look - but then you can't see much when your head is up Bush's rear end.

11. Of course not - he was too busy making googly eyes at his new best friend George.
At least he didn't say "Nobody could have foreseen..."

12. Well then he is an idiiot,
because I foresaw the disaster and I am not the leader of a country. How is it that I knew Iraq did not have WMD and these fuckers didn't? I think they wanted to get their war on no matter what. They can all go to hell.
