Yet another "compassionate" conservative...
This from today's Colorado Pols www.coloradopols.com

Today the Colorado-Cross Disability Coalition responded forcefully to controversial comments made by GOP State House Candidate Don Beezley. In the recently disclosed remarks, Mr. Beezley stated that before the Americans with Disabilities Act, "it had been a pleasure to help a disabled person out with a tray, a door or whatever. After that, I could only think, "you better use my d*** bathroom!" when someone rolled in. ADA took other human beings from being someone with a challenge whom it might be a joy to help, and turned them into a burden."

3. I'm seeing a trend. First Alan Simpson going after disabled
veterans, now this. Could the GOP's next enemy of the state be the disabled?

13. Sounds like a pattern, indeed.
Perhaps they are going to cut people off of Soc. Sec. disability, to "reduce entitlement payments".

budgets are always made at the cost of the poor and weakest members of society.
Ironically, even after they have made us unemployed, homeless and hungry, the budget deficit will be larger than ever.

those of you reading this who are NOT yet a member of the "weakest" better be very aware of what is happening.

14. The middle class is what usually sparks revolutions.
Take away their money and power, then there's a better chance the rich will go unchallenged. Remember, the American revolution was led by the merchants and professionals, not the Lumpen.

The Orange and velvet revolution was middle class. Solidarity was made up of working people.

The poor is too busy just trying to survive. Make the middle class poor and they will be too busy to cause trouble.

4. People with disabilities still don't have it all that easy,
even with the laws in place. In the winter, my brother has to plan his route to work very carefully. Part of his trip is by car, part by public transportation. He has to know where he can walk, which surfaces are rough and smooth, who shovels, etc. If he falls, he can be in big trouble.

We have discussed this several times. People just don't think about these things. Even a relatively minor disability can cause a great deal of hardship. My brother had a stroke at an early age. He walks with a quad cane because his right foot and part of his leg never regained function or feeling.

I have another friend who is a dwarf. I think she is about 4'6" tall. I never bring this up unless she does first. She works for a library system. She gets around her job just fine. Transportation to and from work is an issue for her, though. She has a small motorized vehicle to take her from place to place, simply because it takes her so long to walk anywhere. Her legs are not in proportion to the rest of her body, either.

Both of these people are entitled to their dignity and their independence. Maybe some of us without disabilities are the ones who are burdens, Mr. Beezley.

6. Speaking as a member of the disabled community,
I find your remarks to be grotesque and unabashedly cruel. Utterly uncalled for.

God help you.

11. I Thought The Sarcasm Was SO UTTERLY OBVIOUS.......
Edited on Thu Sep-02-10 10:26 PM by ChoppinBroccoli
.........that I let the post stand on its own merits. I thought that certainly people would realize that I was parodying right-wing hate. Really, how did ANYONE take that post seriously? I mean, REALLY. You didn't realize it when you got to the OBVIOUS jokes in there (the bit about the cushy parking spaces and the one about how making buildings wheelchair accessible only encourages people to be disabled? You didn't recognize that those were obviously jokes?) I thought this crowd was sophisticated enough that spoon-feeding wasn't necessary. I guess I was wrong. I guess like ALL successful comedians and satirists, I'm going to have to start explaining why my jokes are funny (see the sarcasm again? Or do I need to put the emoticon in there for you to realize I'm using a literary device?) Or maybe some folks just need to turn the dial down on the Sensitivity Meter from 11 to 10.

12. I tried to assume you were being sarcastic.
If so, you need to understand that on message boards the use of the sarcasm tag is truly needed.
Your comments were not easily read as sarcasm.

It is NOT the reader's "sensitivity meter" that is at fault, trust me on that.

7. This is a trick answer, I presume, lacking only the sarcasm symbol.
If not, may I ask you courteously about what the hell are you doing here?
How can you have made over 600 posts and have not been thrown out?

You deserve nothing less.

10. Karma would be appropriate for this inconsiderate POS, and he has a debilitating stroke someday
and Beezley personally discovers to his dismay how very necessary the ADA really is for those who are physically/mentally handicapped...:grr:

Just another prime example of why I despise these rightwing pricks.
