October 2nd National March on Washington is gaining momentum. Impressive list of endorsing groups
Edited on Thu Sep-02-10 03:27 PM by Better Believe It

ONE NATION
IS ABOUT REORDERING OUR NATION'S PRIORITIES TO INVEST IN OUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE
— OUR PEOPLE.

Event Date: October 2, 2010

Location: Washington, D.C.

On Saturday, October 2, 2010, hundreds of thousands of Americans from across the country will gather at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to demonstrate our re-commitment to change. The One Nation March will feature human and civil rights leaders, labor leaders, environmental and peace activists, faith leaders, celebrities and sports figures – all marching together to help Put America Back to Work and to Pull America Back Together. And to help reorder our national priorities so that investments in people come first.

We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve the American Dream — a secure job, a safe home, and a quality education — but banksters and corporate lobbyists have made off with trillions of public dollars while small businesses can’t get loans and cities are laying off teachers, police, and firefighters.

In this time of economic crisis, it is easy for fear-mongerers to pit groups against each other and to find convenient scapegoats for the problems that plague us.

ONE NATION seeks to transcend our superficial differences and bring us together in a common quest for equal opportunity and justice for all.

ONE NATION
HAS A NEW
STORY TO TELL
AND WE WANT
YOU TO BE
A PART OF IT.

This movement includes human and civil rights organizations, unions and trade associations, nonprofit organizations, youth and student groups, religious and other faith groups, educational, peace, environmental, and ethnic associations, and any other groups and individuals who are committed to pulling our country back together now. As of late August 2010, there are more than 150 ONWT organizational partners and tens of thousands of individuals.

1. I'm surprised this doesn't have 500 Reccs
It sounds like such a good idea. We really need to show our colors. Stick a thumb in Becks eye. Fuck Fox! On to Washington.

11. It just got one more recommendation.
That's an incredibly diverse and impressive range of different groups: the AFL-CIO, CodePink, Shalom Center, Network of Spiritual Progressives, La Raza, GLBT groups...the other 98% indeed!

Very powerful and very promising. Could be the nucleus of a new political party right there.

118. Unfortunately the old business model unions are going to be difficult to organize into a Labor Party
but on the bright side, a new group of young and more political union organizers around the country may buck the union bureaucracies and accept a pro-union party. That would be SO EXCITING.

37. I've been posting too, since I first heard about it
last week - I think it was too early.

Let's keep it going -- I have a good feeling about this!! I will try to go, but have no disposable income since my layoff in December. I am trying to get a companion rally going in Seattle. Any joiners?

If we get 4 drivers we can drive throughout. Yeah, it would be a painful go, but so is what is happening to us. I'm in Seattle. Any other takers? Sleep at truck stops. Gas paid for as able. I'm still employed but don't want to spend $400.00 on a plane ticket but.....

69. I don't mean to be obtuse, but it's not really clear to me what
exactly this movement "does." I read the website and I understand what it "stands for" and that the purpose of the rally is to "demonstrate our re-commitment to change" and bring people "of all stripes" together.

What isn't clearly defined for me is this:

Is this an anti-current administration rally? A re-commitment to "Obama change" rally?

The definition is kind of nebulous and IMO could be construed in a number of ways.

Any clarification would be appreciated and thanks!

PS - Perhaps this why there are not very many recs: confusion.

87. I think it is a rally for working people
In support of working people..
I don't think it is anti-GOP or anti-DLC (the GOP and DLC both like to think of themselves as "pro-worker" and "pro-middle class")..

The rally is simply to show the DLC (and GOP) that America still has a working class, and that we will take to the streets if needed.

147. Thanks! "In Support of Working People" is a clear purpose, but
to "demonstrate our re-commitment to change" + "to help Put America Back to Work" + "to Pull America Back Together" + "to help reorder our national priorities" so that investments in people come first - all sounds like it is an "ANTI-something" Rally and specifically will probably be interpreted as "Anti-Obama Adminstration"(the last thing our coutry needs right now). It certainly will be advertised as such by the Beck/Palin/Limbaugh gang and all Obama-haters. Thanks for your reply.

161. I would love to see it, but........
I would be very surprised if we could get this collection of groups to do this without an overtly anti-GOP or anti-DNC message (or messages). I believe that this would be extremely powerful if we could make this about working people and how we make things better for them (us), but we will make it just another rally if it gets personal and angry. Maybe that is too much to ask, at this point. I can always hope.

103. HANDS OFF SOCIAL SECURITY - that's one thing that it's about for me
the two parties cannot dismantle the social safety net in this nation. it's immoral. it's repulsive.

and that's a message I want Democrats to hear from this march - and with the list of groups here - that's absolutely a position of those who are supporting this march.

maybe some of us can stay and occupy Alan Simpson's office... he doesn't deserve it anyway
.

Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 12:39 PM by truthrocks
broad and ill-defined - as I said in #147: to "demonstrate our re-commitment to change" + "to help Put America Back to Work" + "to Pull America Back Together" + "to help reorder our national priorities" so that "investments in people come first" - are all noble causes, but also sounds like this is an "ANTI-something" rally and will probably be interpreted as "Anti-Obama Adminstration"(the last thing our coutry needs right now). It certainly will be advertised as such by the Beck/Palin/Limbaugh gang and all Obama-haters. Thanks for your reply - it helped to clarify things for me.

Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 08:17 PM by RainDog
I, and MANY, MANY, MANY of my fellow democrats are MAD AS HELL and we want this administration and this congress to know it.

The RAGE that people feel is real toward the those we elected in order to form a majority - they have failed us through two election cycles in too many ways to count.

So, you know, THAT'S what this is about - people are SUFFERING while Congress jerks off for corporate profits.

They need to get a clue and if this is what it takes to do it - then that will be a great thing b/c, in the history of this nation, this govt has been too willing to let the people who comprise it suffer b/c the govt really doesn't give a shit about the American people - and won't until they feel their jobs are threatened by their actions.

I say it will be a great thing b/c history has shown us that our own govt. is willing to attack and murder people (the bonus army, for instance) before they will be shamed into doing the right thing. It would be nice if people didn't have to fucking die to get the attention of the whores in DC.

205. to the extent that Rahm represents Obama - it will be anti-Obama
b/c every day that Obama keeps Rahm on staff - Obama is telling the democratic base to go fuck itself.

every day that Obama keeps Simpson on the cat food commission - Obama is telling the democratic base to go fuck itself.

I really don't give a shit anymore whether someone might think a march on DC is "anti-Obama" when the people he surrounds himself with are against us.

If he wants people to support him then he shouldn't allow these assholes to continue in their positions - but since he does - he's telling us everything he wants us to know, apparently.

I suppose everyone who arrives in DC could be required by monitors to prove they aren't "professional leftists".

The Right Wing can kiss my ass with hot sauce if they EVEN run their yaps about ANYTHING economic. Those sons of bitches with their Milton Friedman bullshit did so much damage in 30 years to America's infrastructure and economy that without constant Democratic administrations for at least 3 to 4 terms, it will be almost beyond repair.

I'll be protesting the ultra-wealthy, whose unprecedented greed and corrupt thievery led us to this canyon-sized trash-heap in the first place.

143. The RW Has Had Their Field Day & Still IS Having Their Field Day!!
If you haven't been watching or paying attention, so many Democrats have rolled over and LET The Repukes take control!

I don't think this is so much AGAINST Obama, but maybe, just maybe OUR DEMOCRATS will see just how upset and MAD we are! I for one have watched these past two years at what has been going on, watching the DLC TAKE OVER and pretty much side with too many Repukes!

I'm SICK of Blue Dog Democrats, sick of how they think so much like Repukes, and I'm pretty sick of Rahm Emmanuel and Gibbs talking DOWN to the "real base" of the Democratic Party!!

No, I will do everything I CAN to "be there or be square" as another has said! I will be making the rounds of antique shops to unload anything I can, because I've been waiting and waiting for something like this to happen!

THIS IS OUR COUNTRY, it does not belong ONLY to the TPTB and MSM!! If we keep letting the Tea-Baggers get ALL THE FOCUS, then we will be just like so many of our very own Democrats who have sold us out! And Obama and many in his cabinet, who have made me feel I don't count all that much anymore!!

JMHO!!

30. Kicked and Rec'd, but like I said on a previous thread, I'm kind of weary . . .
I just hope to hell this isn't going to devolve into another massive anti-Obama protest.

Something just tells me it will. The last anti-war protest I went to . . . Jesus, it almost felt like being surrounded by TeaBirthers.

We blame a president who, face facts, cannot stop rich greedy old white men being addicted to money and profit. Those same rich greedy white old men want Obama to fail and want another goddamned Republican sock puppet gatekeeper in the White House to cut their taxes even more and give them even more privilege.

The wealthy don't seem to even care that without a workforce, you know, BUYING your products/services, this whole thing is pretty much going to collapse with terrific force.

And just so some of these people attending know, I have nothing at all in common or want anything to do with your fucking Reaganite laissez-fail brand of economics, your Beckistani "yeah, these people hate Obama too!" motivation, your Ron Paul/Oath-Klux Klan bullshit or your "they're all the same" crap.

You're not going to get a progressive in the White House because he/she'd be shot within 6 months to 2 years. You're not going to get Ron Paul in the White House because he's an old lunatic and you have bad hair and smell like old Heinlen/Rand novels.

This better be about the bringing down of the corrupt old/new money system, making corporate America and banking boring again, demanding and expecting far more from the wealthy and why Capitalism does not work for the average American anymore.

55. It's up to people of good conscience to make sure that doesn't happen.
Of course there will be agents provocateurs there, just as there are anywhere people get together to make positive change (even on some discussion boards, so I hear ;) ).

I remember being in an anti-war demonstration not long before the 2003 Iraq invasion. There was a really loud-mouthed right-wing asshole marching with us, yelling inflammatory things at everybody around him. Everyone was very disciplined, kept marching as a group, and did not take the bait. There were cops nearby and he was obviously trying to get one of us to initiate a physical conflict. Tough luck to that jerk-off. He went home disappointed that day.

As the Majority Agenda Project's website says, "Leading with a demand for jobs, this will be a massive demonstration to blunt the attack from the right and to unify a majority of Americans around a hopeful and inspiring vision of our nation based on social justice, mutual respect and common values."

Works for me.

This has never been about Obama, he is just more competent than the last one in his position. This is most certainly about bringing down a corrupt system (at least that is how I look at it).

If so, they might be able to provide you with transportation.

If you are interested in going, please check out the site. There are some areas that the CWA is chartering buses to take people. There may be groups in other areas doing the same.

146. Are You Talking About The CWA? My Husband Was Part Of That Union, Or
are you talking about PDA?? I live about 2 hours SW of you just south of Sarasota. Are you talking about the site listed above??

You don't have a link with your comment. Anyway, I AM interested in what you may have going on. I seriously DOUBT ANY Democrat here in my county will TRY to get anything together and in the past, the closes contact I had was out of Gainesville. You're in a small town, or at least smaller than Sarasota. Are you working our of Tampa??

Just curious! Don't have much to spend, and a bus can be tiresome, but still there IS lot camaraderie! My husband is going to have a fit because I've been screaming about NOTHING happening again, and that I refused to work with my local Democrats because they are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO DLC! I'll have to do some fast talking and promise to make money on my own. STILL, I WANT TO GO!!

My local PDA is looking to go. There was a PDA conference call last night going over details and now I have access to the regional coordinator for the south region. My group is in the process of reaching out and figuring out if SEIU or some other larger group is arranging buses from Orlando or Tampa.

I don't have the details yet as to how we are getting to DC but if you want, I can send you the information when I have it. We are a very small group because I live in Polk and there are not a lot of liberals here. I can send you a PM about the details of the when, where, and how much when I get them.

138. And thankfully, it's not a left-free march. The International Socialist Organization is a sponsor.
A.N.S.W.E.R. is never really at anyone else's march, they're a top down organization that runs they're own game. The ISO is a bottom-up organization that supports any leftist mass gathering and doesn't create top-down marches on its own. They were on the committee that promoted the 200,000 person National Equality March.

But, no thanks, I wouldn't want a McCarthyite "safe" and "leftist free" march.

Like it matters. He probably also knows that since it focuses on a life issue (i.e. one that progressives are FOR and corporatists like HIM are AGAINST), it's likely not going to get the ubiquitous media attention that FailFest 2010 did no matter HOW many people attend . . . as all anti-war protests of 2000-08 didn't.

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous makes the case for the One Nation Working Together mobilization before the civil rights’ groups 101st Annual Convention in Kansas City, Missouri on July 12, 2010. Jealous says that we are the people who will decide whether Americans can once again “raise their children with the hope and trust in the belief that they will enjoy a life filled with opportunity, and the ability to live out their soul’s mission.”

I just spoke with an excellent guy at One Nation in Washington. He said they're putting together a donation page and account right now; it should be up today. He's sending me an email when it goes up. I'll post it as soon as I see it.

JUMP ON THIS AND MAKE IT HAPPEN BIG! IF YOU CAN'T GO, DONATE

Side note: Last July, in Oakland, California Highway Patrol got into a freeway shootout with a heavily armed and body-armored man who was speeding to San Francisco to ignite the revolution by killing people at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU. The guy was a Beck listener; Beck had been railing against the Tides Foundation.

Tides is organizing this event.

141. I'm going to do my best to go.
If you're in Austin, Denton, or Houston, you can check with a local ISO branch to see if they're organization busses, car caravans, or flights. They're on the organizing committee for the Oct. 2nd march and they'll be organizing the general public (as opposed to specific unions who are more likely to be dealing with the overwhelming task of organizing their own members...)

I'm closer to D.C. now that I'm living in Florida, but still need to get some connection!

I have a feeling this is going to be giant. And the best part about it is - it's going to be giant without the help or need of the Corporate Appeaser Media. How hard is it to get 90,000 foot-shooters at the Reflecting Pool/Lincoln Memorial when you have months of promotion by the widespread M$M, the popular carnival barker star of it all and Dick Armey's Freedomworks?

Ever since last August, I've been wondering: "I know we could get a bigger crowd than these asshats. Why doesn't the left mobilize?"

The only problem I have is that it's a little vague. It's easier to mobilize folks for something concrete.

149. I agree that's an important issue
But it's also about equality, and education. Here's what they have to say about jobs:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Provide immediate relief for those who are currently unemployed

* Extend jobless benefits, COBRA, mortgage assistance, and other initiatives for those currently out of work.
* Target help for populations and communities in the greatest need

Provide immediate action to stimulate job growth and consumer demand

* Provide aid to states and cities – including direct job creation at local levels – especially in education, health care, social services and first-responder workforces
* Increase the ability of small businesses to obtain loans
* Fund infrastructure investment that spurs economic growth and clean energy enterprises

Provide a fair chance for everyone to succeed and advance in the workplace

* Everyone who works in America should have the right to join with their co-workers to have a voice on the job
* Pay all workers wages that allow them to support their families
* Increase and index the minimum wage
* Close all pay gaps
* End all forms of workplace discrimination
* Protect, honor, fully apply, and expand equal opportunity and diverse business inclusion practices
* Make every job a good and safe job
* Provide paid sick days and paid family leave for all workers

----------------------------------------------------------------------

What's missing? The balance of trade. So long as it is possible for US corporations to make products more cheaply overseas, and then price those products as if they had actually paid reasonable wages, they will make billions doing so. Every problem with our economy, from unemployment to income inequality to the federal budget deficit, is due to these issues surrounding outsourcing and the balance of trade.

The rub is that you cannot really put the structural problems of the US economy on a bumper sticker. These structural problems are going to be difficult to solve, especially in the face of determined opposition by the business community.

I wish I had an answer to this problem, which is a communications problem as much as it is a policy problem, but I don't. I'll still go if I can, though, because it's high time we stood up and were counted.

203. They're afraid Rahm might yell at them, like he did when
they wanted to run ads against Blue Dogs and DLCers. I haven't contributed to them since after the 2004 election when they disappeared for three months, after asking members what was the most important issue and the overwhelming response was 'election fraud'. They never mentioned it again, waited a few months until they thought people would have forgotten the election fraud, and then reappeared.

They are part of the DC insider crowd now and they don't want to lose their access. I doubt very much they would participate in something like this.

:kick: because it's too late to rec. I won't be able to go, but will tell everyone I know about it. It is about time for the people to be heard.

but your explanation sounds plausible to me!! ANSWER did have some large marches, but they also had A LOT of different issues at each March! Some were not happy about marching against the war and then having speakers from all over talking when we should have been walking!

Still, it's GOOD to see some ACTION!!!

116. "a secure job, a safe home, and a quality education"
Health care should be added to that list. You can't do too much if you don't have your health.

Each day, 273 people die due to lack of health care in the U.S.; that's 100,000 deaths per year.

We need single-payer health care, not a welfare bailout for the serial-killer insurance agencies.

We don't need the GingrichCare of mandated, unregulated, for-profit insurance that is still too expensive, only pays parts of medical bills, denies claims, and bankrupts people. Republinazi '93 plan:
"Subtitle F: Universal Coverage - Requires each citizen or lawful permanent resident to be covered under a qualified health plan or equivalent health care program by January 1, 2005."

"We will never have real reform until people's health stops being treated as a financial opportunity for corporations."

...although I'd be surprised if we had enough fellow progs in Chucktown to get a bus together.

Amtrak is $179.00 round-trip into Union Station. A short stroll to the Mall from there. Leaving Friday night, into D.C. at 7 a.m.'ish, rally my little heart out, back to Union Station by 9 p.m., home around 5 a.m. on Sunday. Enough time to recuperate before Monday morning.

Don't forget cameras, digicams, sunscreen, etc. Also, don't know the policy towards "sticks" for signs. New York classifies sticks as "potentially dangerous objects". Most people either hold the signs or use cardboard tubes as supports. (spellcheck your signs!) I'll probably go with the tri-fold hand sign so I can stick it in my backpack for transport. Can't decide whether to wear my MIB outfit... B-), or my Wavy Gravy duds....:hippie:

. . .but I don't see anything about chartered buses to sign up for. . .or anything like that.

For anyone who plans to go, I did see that Amtrak is running a fall special on the Cardinal line from Chicago to New York (stops in Washington)...it's a long trip, though quite scenic. . .it looks like about $140 roundtrip.

DC is an expensive hotel city. . .I wish there was more information about cutting costs for that as well. . .

226. As a DC resident...
Edited on Sun Sep-05-10 09:15 AM by Chan790
my advice would be to stay in outer No.VA (Manassas or south of Woodbridge) or Baltimore (or even Annapolis if you have a car with you to drive in on Rt. 50. Don't drive into DC, drive to New Carrollton or Landover Metro stops. The free parking lots are desolate on weekends.) and take the VRE or MARC in.

The train will cost you about $8 each way, you can buy an all-day Metro pass once in DC for about the same and you'll save close to $100 for 2 nights on a hotel. Parking is also insane in DC, they recently raised the metered rate on street parking in the neighborhood I work in to $0.25 for 15 minutes. Lot or garage parking will set you back at-least $10, possibly $15.

A Murfreesboro activist plans on being a part of an Oct. 2 march on Washington, D.C., to push for job creation.

Darrell Bouldin of Murfreesboro is founder and national coordinator of coffeepartyprogressives.com, which is a national steering committee member of One Nation Working Together.

"We hope to have tens of thousands of people marching on the National Mall," Bouldin said. "We want to come together and bring unity. We need a jobs bill. We are asking for the change we voted for from President (Barack) Obama. We want jobs and educational funding."

Field organizer Raphael Smith spoke to The Daily News Journal shortly after the morning press conference promoting the October event.

"Our goal is to turn out 5,000 Tennesseans to advocate for more jobs," he said.

Buses will transport supporters from Middle Tennessee to the nation's capital for the Oct. 2 rally.

"We are going to be signing people up in Murfreesboro," Bouldin said. "Our goal is to get at least 100 people from Murfreesboro to come to Washington."

The Augusta NAACP chapter, along with more than 170 other organizations, will participate in a march on Washington, D.C., in October to "pull the nation back together and demand the change many Americans voted for."

Dr. Charles Smith, the president of the chapter, said the march is to demand jobs, justice and education and reorder national priorities so investments in people come first.

The march, organized by One Nation Working Together, will be held at noon Oct. 2 at the Lincoln Memorial.

A bus will leave Walmart at 3209 Deans Bridge Road at 11 p.m. Oct. 1. To reserve a seat, contact Smith at (706) 724-0390 or drsmit4@earthlink.net.

Peace in the Valley
BY STEPH GREEGOR
September 2, 2010

He, along with Pastor Dale Snyder Sr. of Bethel A.M.E. Church on Cleveland Avenue, Pastor Lamar and Noel Williams, president of the Columbus chapter of the NAACP, marched in a united show of black leadership in the neighborhood in a plea for peace.

“We want the violence to stop,” said Williams. “What we’re doing is building relationships. People don’t care about leadership until they know you care about them. That’s when we can make positive, effective change.”

That’s why Williams of the NAACP is leading the One Nation March in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 2, to help appeal to Congress for better education, a fairer justice system and job-creation legislation.

“We’ve already got six to seven buses lined up to go,” she said. “We believe every American citizen who wants a job has a right to a job and the right to a fair judicial system and the right to a quality education.”

FROM DETROIT

COMMENTARY
March for jobs, justice, peace
BY JESSE JACKSON
August 27, 2010

On Aug. 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King led the March on Washington, with the vital support of United Auto Workers President Walter Reuther. This year, on Aug. 28, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition will join UAW President Bob King and congressional, civil rights and union leaders to lead a march in Detroit for jobs, justice and peace.

The march in Detroit will be accompanied and followed by marches across the country, culminating on Oct. 2, when we will gather once more as one nation in Washington, D.C.

For too long, special interests have stood in the way of the general good. In these past months, the voices of those who would divide us have been louder than those who would bring us together. Those peddling fear have gained more attention than those peddling hope. We cannot afford to turn on one another.

Mass Marches Across the Nation to Expose Vast Racial Inequities
by Hazel Trice Edney
August 26, 2010

• Saturday, Oct. 2, Washington, D.C. Mall: “One Nation, Working Together for Jobs, Justice and Education for All”, sponsored by the NAACP and more than 200 social and civil rights organizations around the nation of multiple races and socio-economic statuses.

NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous said the march is aimed to push for progress in the U.S. Senate by encouraging people to vote on Nov. 2.

“We have made tremendous progress in this country over the last two years. We have seen this progress destroyed by obstructionists in the Senate, including on job creation, justice for Black farmers, and urgently needed funding for schools,” Jealous said.

“Where we’ve made progress, we’ve made progress because Blacks, Latinos, organized labor, students and small business people found a way to work together and put our shoulders to the wheel together. We saw that with health care for instance which was pronounced DOA and then revived by us coming back together and working hard together.”

The October march, nicknamed the "10-2-10 March", will have a three step goal, Jealous said. “Step one will get people to Washington on Oct. 2 so we are reenergized and refocused. Step two is to return to our communities to re-energize, refocus and reconnect our neighbors, get them committed to vote and turnout. Step three is to return to Washington next spring with the agenda of the march and work with Congress to get bills passed and assure that progress is made.”

The fact that America has its first Black president has not slowed the need to press for change in racial inequities.

Anyone who thought marching and rallies would be over due to the Obama presidency had a “foolish thought,” says Jackson. “There’s always been a competition for the attention of the president. Whoever has the most activity and strength gets on the priority list. … Marching empowers the president.”

Ed Schultz Announces October 2nd “One Nation Working Together” Washington March
September 5, 2010

Friday night (September 3) on “The Ed Show” on MSNBC, progressive talk show host Ed Shultz laid down a challenge for Americans to put aside their differences and come together. for what is truly needed and important in our country at this time: more jobs so that every person in America who wants to work can get a job and be able to support his or her family now and into the future. Schultz announced that he is joining the One Nation Working Together movement and will be a featured speaker at the October 2 One Nation Working Together march in Washington.

He proclaimed: “This is about now and this is about jobs. Labor has been under attack for the last thirty years. It is my motivation to be a part of this and to motivate the audience of this television show to get on this platform; to be a part of this march on Washington on October 2nd.”

Too many of our fellow citizens are hungry, homeless and hopeless in this country. And instead of indulging in the politics of fear and isolation that seem to dominate, we are coming together to work as one toward concrete goals that bring justice to our communities.
