1. Raleigh checking in - just walked the dogs, all weirdly calm here. Not a whisper of breeze.
Cloudy, a few sprinkles, but this is clearly a coastal event. The trajectory of Earl (a curling approach) very different from the direct attach of Fran in 1996, which made a real mess out of so much of Eastern NC (and took out 100 trees in our yard!).

Thanks for the query! To tell the truth, we could use the rain, so a bit disappointing that the bands are not really reaching us. And close to 100 degrees for tomorrow!

5. My dad's house is in Norfolk.
We moved him out to Williamsburg and the family home is on the market. Dad isn't well; I strongly suspect he drove to the house to secure things but he may go inside (there's nothing in there, it's completely moved out) and stay through the storm. He and Mom endured a couple of hurricanes there before and some trees and an awning came down. He's not returning his cell calls (but that's not unusual). My sister can't get a hold of him, either (she's in Fredericksburg).

There will probably be flooding in Ocean View, along the beaches and probably downtown Norfolk (it always floods there when it rains).

7. I'm a lot further north than that (LI)

It's a pretty nice night. The humidity hasn't kicked in yet (and you know what I'm talking about if you've ever been in one of these). It's a little breezy but not because of the storm. We're out of the cone for hurricane strength wind right now, but we're solidly inside the cone for tropical storm winds. I wish our friends to the north and south of here the best.

8. Outer Bands?
And no one actually lives on Cape Hatteras. It's an undeveloped spit of land. Lots of people live on Hatteras Island which is what the cape is part of.
