Woman burned by acid in Vancouver (WA) says she will not allow attack to 'wreck my life'

How do you measure, and what kind of yardstick do you use, the gumption of Bethany Storro?

The 28-year-old Vancouver woman was attacked Monday night by a woman who threw acid in her face.

She went from celebrating her new job and her recent move to Washington state from Idaho, to writhing in agony on the ground as the skin on her face bubbled and sizzled and portions of her blouse disintegrated.

Last night, Dr. Nick Eshraghi, a burn surgeon at the Oregon Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, performed surgery on Storro’s face, removing dead skin from the areas that were most deeply injured.

This morning, her pain alleviated somewhat by a nerve block, Storro talked to reporters at a news conference for nearly 30 minutes, her face entirely swathed in white cotton bandages. Her parents, Nancy and Joe Neuwelt, were at her side.

I think this woman is very brave and forgiving.

1. Saw her on TV as I was having my car serviced today
What a positive attitude. What a gracious young woman. Everybody in the waiting room was nearly speechless.

I'm pretty cynical, but I was really impressed with her optimism.

I'm glad there are people like her in the world.

2. She made a choice, and the right one.
Look behind and be angry and bitter, or move forward. Rationally, there's nothing she can do to undo what happened.

Smart. I wish her all the best.

3. Let's hope the spirit of forgiveness doesn't prevent her
from giving the police an accurate description of the woman who attacked her.

She can be forgiving once that vicious person is off the street.

But yes, she needs to focus on healing right now.

4. A "nerve block?"
Nerve block for pain relief

A nerve block relieves pain by interrupting how pain signals are sent to your brain. It is done by injecting a substance, such as alcohol or phenol, into or around a nerve or into the spine.

Nerve blocks may be used for several purposes, such as:
  • To determine the source of pain.
  • To treat painful conditions.
  • To predict how pain will respond to long-term treatments.
  • For short-term pain relief after some surgeries and other procedures.
  • For anesthesia during some smaller procedures, such as finger surgery.

Nerve blocks are used to treat chronic pain when drugs or other treatments do not control pain or cause bad side effects. A test block is usually performed with local anesthetic. If you achieve good pain relief from the local anesthetic, your doctor may inject a nerve block, such as alcohol or phenol...
