Fewer Young Voters See Themselves as Democrats
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/03/us/politics/03students.html

OK, I try to defend the milennials, especially since some(not all) Boomers do not cut them a fair break. They inherited a much different world then the Boomers, or even Gen X did. I also distrust the NYT, as they are often trying to lurch right now. However, let me say this, if Milennials become GOP, then I will be tempted to finally hang up the flag and join the Nihilists. It's one thing to not participate, it's another to become GOP.

And please, let's not do the easy thing and blame those dern kids and their Ipods. If we have no interest in getting future generations on board, we lose all claim to being liberals.

1. It has been my understanding that Millenials do not like Politics
Up until I read this post, that while they do not like
labels, they are predisposed to the more liberal side
of the spectrum. They have been one of the most
active in community service, helping others.

4. They are liberal when it comes to social issues but I'm sure they are concerned about
How they are expected to provide for themselves, the deficit, and their elders. We have left them with a huge burden indeed.

2. The kids turned out for Obama in droves and they are overwhelmingly progressive.
While they probably won't go GOP, they may stay home. And they are one reason, maybe the reason, that bashing progressives is door knob stupid.

18. Many of these kids aren't progressive, they are apathetic
they came to the polls become of Obama's movie star status, no Senator or Governor of either party has that (except for Arnold)

That sounds terminal, with no prospect of a cure.

5. The politics of disappointment
Shows what happens when instead of standing up and fighting for progressive policies, a party is perceived to prefer protecting the interests of the corporate right on K Street.

6. These complete and total fools don't even realize who created the bad economy.
Why is that? It's because we, the Democrats, have complete and total fools in The White House and in Congress who have no clue how to label this economy as THE REPUBLICAN ECONOMIC DISASTER! Listening to Obama Tuesday pretty much told me this bunch is hopeless.

8. Obama chose to focus on health care before climate change.
It's a reasonable choice but it's bound to have consequences. Most Congressional Democrats still don't understand or deliver for young voters.

Still, Boomers voted for Nixon over McGovern. Gen Y is far more Democratic so far.

9. Young adults tend to be relatively uninterested in politics
The surge in the youth vote during the 2008 election season was an anomaly.

Oh well, at least he got a health insurance bill that helps out giant health insurance companies.

11. If we had real democrats
in this country fighting for real progressive values and fighting against all the obvious corruption that exists in Washington, this generation would be overwhelmingly democratic to the point where the repubs would no longer even be relevant. As others have said, this generation is pretty much 100% liberal when it comes to social issues but the reason they all dont support dems is because they see the shitty centrist members who are basically just republicans in hiding ruining the dems image and they end up seeing both parties as two sides of the same coin.

If the dems actually acted like liberals and fought for real liberal values and were wiling to come out strong against the repubs we could literally make the republicans irrelevant. Obama won because he motivated his base and brought out the youth vote. If they just tried to appeal to the youth in this country we wouldn't be worrying about this election.

13. the Rahm strategy of saying ''fuck you, vote for us because the republicans are worse''
is not playing with the kids.

Incremental positive change at the cost of massive sellouts to the financial elite is not the way to keep the kids in your corner.

I think a lot of young people recognize that things are messed up; I doubt most of them understand why.

16. Did they ever see themselves as Dems or Repukes or anything?
Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 03:46 AM by pstokely
Many of these first time voters waited in line to cast their vote for Obama and then left without even looking at the rest of the ballot and probably won't show up until 2012 if ever again. These types don't even pay attention to politics and will probably stay at home in November unless there's someone of celebrity status running like a washed up movie star (Arnold, Raygun, Gary Coleman) They won't vote Repuke, they won't be voting at all and there is nothing anyone can do. These aren't likely voters to begin with. If they do show up, the line will be short this time.

21. I'm not worried, as most young folks hate right wing conservofascism in general
The christofascist repukes are constantly telling the rest of us how to live their shitty, boring, drab, narrow, uncreative and repressive lifestyle, thus making the rest of us rebels with a cause.

Kids will rebel against them even if the cows come home.

22. This is the NYT's wet dream! "Socially liberal" Republicans

The NYT is always pushing this. They support Wall Street and "free market" capitalism but also support socially liberal causes.

It's neo-liberalism. This is how we got the Washington Concensus. We're always getting deceived by our own side.

29. BINGO!
And the reason you hear me rant about Charlie crist and Evan Bayh is that the NYT knows a party cannot corral people into this mode, so know, we have to have the so called "moderates" which are the wimps and whores of both parties getting together to ensure that they ruin any agenda for change far better than any mere party could.
