Sad Story
I was doing my laundry at a commercial laundry on Cypress Creek Road in Fort Lauderdale and putting it in my car when this fortyish woman comes up to me and tells me she had to sell her car and she's broke and has to care for her fourteen year old son. She's trying to sell some discount dental plan that as a salesperson myself I think is an extraordinarily tough sell, virtually impossible. When I tell her I don't need or can't afford the dental plan she asks if I can loan her a couple of dollars which I gladly do even though that left me with a whopping eleven dollars in cash.

This economy is really messed up...

1. When does our "recession" become a "depression"??
Seems to me that things are pretty depressed right now!

3. Yup - it will become a depression only when it becomes politically expedient to call it
that. In reality? I think we are already in a depression.

4. When Your Neighbor Is Out Of Work It's A Recession
When you're out of work it's a depression. A Republicant said that but it doesn't make it less so.

As an aside I am in Central Florida. Nothing prepared me for the amount of homeless you see in South Florida.

2. Bless you for giving her money even though you are struggling yourself...
What a good person you are for doing that, and what a wonderful example to all of us. Bless you.

5. Sadder story
A woman and her daughter were going door to door in my neighborhood a few days ago, collecting donations so they could bury a family member.

This economy is fucked up beyond all recognition.

8. The Sad Thing Is She Is Selling Something Virtually Unsellable
You are not going to make a living, going from person to person, on the street selling a discount dental plan with a looseleaf folder as your only collateral material. I can't believe the company sends out people so poorly equipped.

10. She probably had to pay the company for that looseleaf folder.
:nuke:

But, its not possible to increase food stamps rather than slice them, its not possible to stimulate the economy by building good, GREEN, low-income housing, its not possible to increase SS and disability to a living wage--so that the economy is benefitted, its not possible to alot disabled people money to pay caregivers, rather than shoving them into ugly and expensive nursing homes.... its not possible in this selfish and richest country in the world TO TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN!

11. Chances are she paid for that notebook
and the whole thing is a scam, with her the person getting scammed.

There's got to be a special place in hell for people who take advantage of unemployed people desperate for work, any work, with scams like that.
