Graphic video of opossum slaughter leads to charges
A former Vista resident faces felony animal abuse charges after posting online a graphic video shot by his younger sister that shows him hacking an opossum to death with a cleaver, the San Diego County Humane Society said Thursday.

Humane Society officials said the charge against Carter Livingston, 19, now living in Auburn, was filed Wednesday by the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office.

Livingston could face up to a year in jail and a $20,000 fine if convicted.

The video was posted on Livingston’s Facebook page. It shows him striking an opossum 44 times with a meat cleaver, killing it.

“It’s a pretty gruesome video,” said Humane Society Lt. Cesar Perea, who investigated the case. “It appears sadistic, almost ritualistic.”

Perea said Livingston had his 15-year-old sister videotape the attack, and her voice can be heard protesting his actions.

“She said, ‘That’s one of God’s creatures,’ and he says, ‘No, that’s one of Satan’s creatures,’ ” Perea said.

2. I got a good education on possums when I found 5 babies in my
garage. Called pest control and when they came out I asked what they would do with them & the guy looked at me like I was crazy and said "we kill them". I said nevermind and went online for help. Found a "possum lady" only 3 blocks from my house so took them over there. She explained to me the good things possums do (they actually don't do anything bad), that they are resistant to rabies, they eat all the bad things you don't want in your garden and when they are that small they are cute as Hell. People should educate themselves on these creatures - don't kill them.

5. We have a lot of 'possums, squirrels, and raccoons in my neighborhood...
I like having them around. I live in a suburban area with a wildlife preserve less than a mile from home... I love the juxtaposition.

7. I've seen them pull a dozen chickens guts out and leave them to rot.
They can decimate a flock. They don't survive long on my property.

11. I have chickens
and have lots of possums on the property and they have never caused a problem. My chicken pen is made of hardware cloth and nothing can get in except bugs. I love them because they take care of mice and rats.

3. "another serial killer for god"
We've seen the progression too many times before. This guy needs the book thrown at him... and some serious mental health help.

4. Sigh. Kids.
I remember when all you needed was a 4.10 to take care of those pests.

8. My opossum story
got up one night to the dogs barking at an opossum laying motionless on the patio. I figured they had killed it and I unceremoniously scooped up the body with a shovel and dropped it in the same trash can I use for the dog poop. The next morning I noticed the poop can moving so I gingerly opened it and there from the bottom of the can two little beady eyes peered up from what looked like a big pile of hairy shit. Poor little guy looked at me like "what the hell did I do to deserve THIS?"

Then it hit me; in the fog of being 90% asleep the phrase "playing possum" didn't even register in my brain. I cleaned him off as best I could and turned him loose. No doubt he got quite a reception back at the nest..."Did you go out and get shit-faced AGAIN last night?!" "Oh man, you won't believe the shit that happened to me last night!"

10. Mr. Livingston is a useless, irredeemable waste of flesh.
Empty a 12-gauge into his hollow skull and have done.

People who torture and kill innocent animals are future serial killers. Guaranteed. Remove them from existence with extreme prejudice.
