Brewer says she was wrong about beheadings
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said Friday she was wrong when she claimed that headless bodies were turning up in the Arizona desert as part of border-related violence.

"That was an error, if I said that," Brewer said about beheadings occurring in Arizona.

The Republican incumbent's June comments about beheadings were raised during a Wednesday debate by Democratic challenger Terry Goddard, who said the comments were false and damaging to Arizona's image.

Brewer didn't respond to Goddard's challenge about the beheadings claim — she instead changed the subject. Afterward, when reporters asked about the claim, she cut short the question-and-answer session.

9. This is worse
"If I said that" is suggesting there is a possibility that Brewer never made the claim!

32. What I meant was
"If I said it" is worse than the "I'm sorry if.." because it implies there is a possibility that Brewer didn't say what she said qualified by the "if" in "If I said it".

Par for the course yeah I agree. Just couldn't tell if you misunderstood what I said or not based on that.

11. The point remains that she was on a tear to make Arizona sound dangerous

...and which is not good for the Arizona economy, which was the entire focus of how that came up in the debate.

12. Maybe we can negate the law the same way.
"Governor Brewer, signing that bill into law was wrong. Will you apologize?"

"That was an error, if I signed that."

Then we take that statement to court and claim the signature was forged!! TADAAA! :)

15. Seriously, though, this screws her in the "Pleasing voters" category.
She's not going to win over liberals or moderates who already oppose her with the "apology." And she won't make her supporters happy, since many of them have been swearing on their mother's corset that there were beheadings. Hell, most of her supporters probably had a friend of a friend in a high position who saw the bodies, so they know it's true. Now Brewer calls them liars.

Although, they are Republicans. They'll just pretend they never said it, either, and claim they were right all along.

17. The non-admission admission
Goes right along with the standard non-apology apology, "I'm sorry if you were offended" in that it's not an admission of anything. Sure, she talked about decapitated bodies showing up in Arizona back in June, but she had a very important political point to make at that time, and nobody was going to give her any credit unless she conjured up a whole bunch of bodies out of thin air.

Finally, three months later, when her assertion is found to be not just baseless, but a total fabrication, Gov. Brewer retreats to the shelter of "if I said that." Gosh, June was such a loooong time ago! Who remembers every little thing they said or did that long ago?

Ball's in your court, people of Arizona. Is this the person you want as your governor?

22. I wish I believed in that kind of a system. I hope for it, but I'm just too skeptical.
After watching Reagan get caught in treasonous acts and lie after lie after lie, then watching Clinton get impeached over a (relative to Reagan's crimes) trivial case, then watching Bush get away with lying us into wars and recessions and even lying his way into office... I just don't know that I trust Republicans to learn.

26. Brewer scuttled her campaign.
WTF - "if" you said it Jan? Holy cow, looks like she is working overtime to destroy her campaign. Add this to her announcement that she will do no more debates, her disastrous bigoted stance on immigrants, and her awkwardness facing a less than friendly press and it looks for all the world like she is about to "Angle" herself right out of a job. Keep up the good work Jan!

Yes, you're supposed to lie your ass off. No, you never admit it, even if it's on videotape. You cry "lamestream media persecution" and let the orcs and Fox News rise to your defense.

36. You also have to be at least fairly good-looking to get away with
that sort of nonsense. Yes, I know, Palin's nasty character makes her unattractive, but by objective standards she actually is pretty, and if we never had heard her say a word or heard about any of the evil crap she pulls, we would consider her pretty, especially for a 40-something woman.

29. She just misspoke. She meant to say that "headless ZOMBIES" were turning up in the desert.
Although by phrasing it that way, she'd obviously be writing off the large zombie contingent within the teabaggers.
