Man indicted after wife is eaten alive by maggots

INCINNATI - A grand jury has indicted a Cincinnati man for allegedly not taking care of his bedridden wife and allowing her to be eaten by maggots while alive.

Darrel White, 65, was charged today with involuntary manslaughter and failing to provide for a functionally impaired person. Those charges carry a maximum prison sentence of 11-1/2 years.

White is accused of allowing his wife, Jorene White, 46, to die by not taking her to the doctor or taking care of her while she was sick.

“This is a horrible case,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said today. “We have never seen anything like this before. She was literally being eaten alive by maggots.”

Police responded July 23 to a 911 call to the Whites’ home. The home was so filthy and smelled so badly, police wore special masks and suits to enter it, records state.

10. The worst case I ever saw was an elderly man being cared for

at home. When they brought him in, he looked to be a well nourished man, younger than his stated age, lying on his side. When we turned him over, we found bed sores down to the bone all up and down that side of his body. The family either didn't know they needed to turn him every 2 hours or hadn't wanted to turn him and make him uncomfortable. He died within a week and I'm sure they blamed us.

Often families just don't know what's going on.

Maggots, BTW, are not a bad sign. They eat necrotic flesh while leaving the healthy stuff alone. They were her best hope of survival had she been found soon enough. Alas, she wasn't.

In fact, they scrupulously avoid eating live flesh, which makes them valuable to medical treatments for gangrene or other flesh-wasting diseases.

Crazy people that is:
We once found an old couple literally living in two feet of their own and cat feces. Papers and trash piled to the ceiling. Only narrow corridors of crap to move around. Lady had maggots too....APS, Animal control, County fire, Environmental Health, Hazmat, and the DA and the cops--because thay had adult childen who we could prove visited them. We were all there. Everyone had to get suited up to go in. The drywall was saturated with urine throughout. The decision was made to torch the house after we got the couple out............. There have always been and will always be crazy people. When does the behavior become criminal with such people? I guess it depends.

Probably a case of diminished capacity. But all the facts aren't in. At 65, he might well have a mental condition or other medical conditions that prevented him from understanding the problems of his wife. Some people live in trashy,filthy, disgusting houses and think nothing is wrong.
