Once a Dynamo, the Tech Sector Is Slow to Hire
Once a Dynamo, the Tech Sector Is Slow to Hire
By CATHERINE RAMPELL

For years the technology sector has been considered the most dynamic, promising and globally envied industry in the United States. It escaped the recession relatively unscathed, and profits this year have been soaring.

But as the nation struggles to put people back to work, even high-tech companies have been slow to hire, a sign of just how difficult it will be to address persistently high joblessness. While the labor report released last week showing August figures provided mildly positive news on private-sector hiring, the unemployment rate was 9.6 percent.

The disappointing hiring trend raises questions about whether the tech industry can help power a recovery and sustain American job growth in the next decade and beyond. Its tentativeness has prompted economists to ask “If high tech isn’t hiring, who will?”

“We are talking about people with very particular, advanced skills out there who are at this point just not needed anymore,” says Bart van Ark, chief economist at the Conference Board, a business and economic research organization. “Even in this sector, there is tremendous insecurity.”

2. Where I was much of the work was being outsourced to cheaper labor
engineers in other countries and at the same time green cards to tech workers. It's no surprise that the tech sector is slow to hire. It's the same as what was done with manufacturing. In fact, hi tech is even easier to outsource to lower labor countries than manufacturing. The model sucks, but the big buck guys want nothing to change.

Why so many Americans are so slow to see what is going on eludes me. There is nothing sacred about hi tech, it will go to the cheapest labor country too...

Our system here is seriously flawed if one wants a system that works well for the majority of the citizens. Those currently still having jobs are going to be quite surprised as they hit the streets looking for work as this mess progresses. It doesn't matter how great one is or thinks they are... the jobs will go to the lowest bidder. And many corps. will hire several cheap outsourced engineers than one US based engineer. American employees really need to wake up. USA, Inc.

12. When lawyers and CEOs start getting outsourced
I look forward to seeing that ox get gored. Some of these companies are ripe for a corporate raider to come in and cut executive pay to minimum wage so they can pay a better dividend.

15. Good point....
The profile of India's tech industry rose when GM named one of the country's leading companies, Wipro (WIT), as a tier-one supplier.

Judging from this article, (2001) it states that Ford has been a longterm client of Satyam.

"Satyam has a lot of old economy clients such as Ford Motor Co,"

But I think he/she was just commenting on outsourcing/offshoring practices of GM and Ford.

As for me, I think you already know from the past that I'm 100% against the outsourcing/offshoring of both blue and white collar jobs.

Also, he won't buy a Big 3 car because he doesn't "support mediocrity" (sic).

31. Oh.....I see....

As I've said in the past, blue and white collar workers need to ban together and support each other. (Goods and Services)

With that being said, I've never owned a foreign car, nor will I. But.....I do have a real problem with the Big 3 offshoring their IT dept.'s yet expecting me to continue buying their cars.

Know what I mean? Where does one put their foot down? Times are just bad all the way around. :(

23. You're demanding protection for your job while celebrating "free trade"
The results of such a convoluted position are self-evident: you say, "every man for himself (except for me.)"

Guess what? I feel the same way about you and your livelihood. Why would you expect otherwise?

And it began FAR before the term IT was ever coined. :hi:

9. Much of the 'tech' sector is based on:
Software programming in India. Hardware manufacturing in China. Benefits accrue to CEO and founders.

22. The tech companies were greedy.
They moved most of the jobs to India and other places. Simply because they could make more money. That's what capitalism is about.
