Terry Jones, Koran-Burning Pastor, Doesn't Care What General David Petraeus Has to Say
By Jen Doll, Tue., Sep. 7 2010 @ 11:06AM

Gun-toting Florida pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, is standing by his single-mindedly awful plan to burn Korans at his church on September 11 despite General Petraeus's concerns about how the event will impact the safety of American troops -- and Americans in general. The fact that General Petraeus has to even address such an individual is patently ludicrous. And yet, here were are.

Yesterday Afghans protested Jones's event by burning American flags, shouting "Death to America," and burning an effigy of him. Thousands aso protested outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta on Sunday.

But Jones, who wrote a book called Islam is of the Devil -- and whose organization has come under fire for operating a for-profit furniture business called TS and Company (here, listed on eBay) despite the church's tax-exempt status -- seems hellbent on taking this special moment in religious intolerance and using it to promote himself.

"What we are doing is long overdue. We are revealing the violence of Islam that is much, much deeper than we'd like to admit," Jones said in an interview with ABC News.

.......................

"We can not back down just because of fear, because if we back down, it won't make Islam any more moderate," he said.

The Christian Science Monitor gives perhaps the best picture of this guy, who was pretty much destined to creepy cultish dealings and backlash within his own organization -- his own daughter is speaking out against him, alleging "mental violence" and backbreaking work in the furniture store to garner profit -- before he took advantage of the current religious climate to garner the attention of the media:

Mr. Jones who seems to spend much of his time inside a dank, dark office with a poster from the movie Braveheart and a picture of former President George W. Bush, appears to be largely oblivious to the potential consequences of his plans.

1. Jones isn't going to change his alleged mind
He is one of those True Believers, who takes great comfort and joy in verses about "even though the whole world be against you" or "blessed are you when men revile you for my name's sake." There is no way he can be wrong, because he's got a direct line to God, and the rest of you ants are just so much background noise interfering with his signal. So shut up, already.

Jones is the type who is the hero of the old joke about a guy perched on his roof as the floodwaters inundate his town. Sitting there, he prays to God to save him from the catastrophe. He's interrupted by a guy in a small motorboat, who offers to ferry him to safety. The man declines, confident that God will save him in a miraculous manner as a testimony to God's mighty arm. The man in the boat motors off to look for sane people to rescue. Same story with another guy in a boat, and finally a Coast Guard helicopter. The guy on the roof is convinced God will save him and refuses to go with them. Of course, the floodwaters rise more, and he drowns. At the pearly gates, he's chatting with St. Peter, and expresses his disappointment in God's handiwork in failing to save him. St. Peter, in a grumpy mood, says, "God sent two boats and a fucking helicopter to rescue your ass, dumbshit. Your place here isn't going to be ready for years. Let's see if you float around any better here than you did on Earth."

6. US lives will be lost over this. Probably military lives. The press will not hold Jones
accountable. They will blame Democrats for being "soft on terrorism."

This is one prediction I hope will not come true, but I can already see the writing on Bill Kristol's next column.

8. I'm curious if there are any
counter protests planned. It would be wonderful to see these idiots hateful actions being drowned out by hundreds or thousands of peaceful Christians denoucing Jones' hateful rhetoric.

10. Perspective, people
what's costing military lives is an insane war policy that puts our troops in the line of fire without having either popular support at home or a strategic objective on the battlefield, and Betray-us is a big part of that.

16. I agree
though I do think the Koran burning is a pig ignornant move. The Taliban doesn't need this as an excuse to fan the flames of violence, though.
