I can say this is true because next week my wife and I will celebrate 24 years of civil union; we were married (totally civil, no religion) by a clerk in tennis shoes in an abandoned elevator shaft. I think it cost us $24.

If we didn't agree on all the above, we'd have given it up years ago.

He was actually pro-choice, pro-gay rights, etc. He just felt strongly that Republicans were right on economics, and boy I wonder if he's learned that lesson yet! LOL!

We argued on some things, but he was nowhere near as far right as the party is now. He even voted for Ann Richards for Governor and Bill Clinton's second term.

But unless it was another very moderate person like him, no fucking way. It's not about party labels... it's about being with someone who believes in the same things I do, and most of my values and beliefs are strongly tied to the Democratic platform.

Being somewhat less socially liberal than many of my fellow Democrats, I might have an easier time of it than some others if she was fairly moderate.
I am very much an economic liberal/leftist (pro-labor and all), a libertarian would be diametrically opposite me and the worst possible match. I would clash with a teabagger much worse than with a bible thumper.
A moderate (R) would have less problems with me being a liberal Democrat than an extremist would, so it would help that way, too.

Personally though, I knew the answer to that the year I worked on the McCarthy campaign: my politics were bound to my personal ethics (what the Repubs insist on calling "morality"). If someone I cared for had strong feelings in the other direction, we would likely be able to remain friends as long as we called a truce on politics and had plenty of other interests in common -- but I would find it difficult to live with such a person, as politics is something I want to be able to talk about in my own home and have my opinions valued.

My first husband was someone who co-managed the local McCarthy campaign HQ with me, but within the decade became hostile to talk of politics. My second husband was kind of apolitical at the time I met him -- he was a "latent Democrat" ;-) and I turned him around.

I have both friends and relations who are more conservative than I am, and as we mutually value our relationships, we avoid political topics. I don't give campaign speeches to my next-door neighbors; I save them for voter reg drives downtown.

in our state, for very different reasons, however. I did use to lean more conservatively two decades ago but life's experiences changed my outlook quite a bit. My husband is a "live and let live" kind of person, thinks that rush/hannity/boner/etc. are all idiots and is quite socially liberal. We do tend to disagree vehemently on military issues. The best part about him is that he listens well, reaffirms my positions and we don't let things become too personal. He is so disgusted with Rick Scott running for governor that he's declared to me that he'll vote for Alex Sink and possibly Meek (he doesn't like wishy-washy Crist). He is very anti-teabagger and called them redubbed republicans early on.

His immediate family are very NE conservatives as well except for one bro is a a strong liberal, but the rest of his family from both sides are die-hard FDR democrats from Long Island. His great aunt who's still alive even ran for mayor on the dem ticket before (strong Irish Catholic dem).

FL's democratic party is frustrating...there are others here too who always vote dem but also share that frustration. In VA I was registered dem but not here.

84. NFW. Not possible. I genuinely believe that republicans have serious

moral/ethical personality disorders. When I evaluate the ideology of the republican party, and especially the actions of the party, it leads me to conclude that anyone that belongs to or supports such a heinous organization and its candidates has a very twisted moral/ethical value system that makes it impossible for me to relate to them on almost any level.

If someone is stupid or twisted enough to vote for Bu*h and Cheney, I'm waaaay out of their league.
