The REAL ‘Stuff White People Like’
I found this facinating.

What is it that makes a culture unique? How are whites, blacks, Asians, or whoever different from everybody else? What tastes, interests, and concepts define an ethnic group? And is there any way to make fun of other races in public and get away with it?

These are big questions, and here's how we answered them.

We selected 526,000 OkCupid users at random and divided them into groups by their (self-stated) race. We then took all these people's profile essays (280 million words in total!) and isolated the words and phrases that made each racial group's essays statistically distinct from the others'.

For instance, it turns out that all kinds of people list sushi as one of their favorite foods. But Asians are the only group who also list sashimi; it's a racial outlier. Similarly, as we shall see, black people are 20 times more likely than everyone else to mention soul food, whereas no foods are distinct for white people, unless you count diet coke.

It really is worth a read...

1. Thats pretty cool!
My favorite part was "To easily figure out of white guys will like it, but the word fucking in the middle of it and if it sounds badass, then white guys will most likely like it!"

2. Well, that's a relief
I've never been nuts about sushi but I love sashimi.

And with my Irish hide, I've got to be the whitest white person most of them ever saw in Japanese places.

Other than that, it looks like the average respondent to their questionaire was male and under 30.

10. Some sad history
The Red Sox were owned by Tom Yawkey, a racist cracker of the highest magnitude. The Sox were the last team in the AL to sign a black player, and passed on the chance to sign Jackie Robinson.

Today, the team's strongest following is in the Irish and Dominican communities (the Sox have had a number of Dominican stars, eg, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez).

Ironically, the Celtics, who are viewed by a lot of people as a "white boys" team, signed the first black player and the first black head coach in the NBA.

14. Actually, a problem I have with the methodology is that these are OKcupid profiles.
At a dating site people are only going to list the things they like if they fall into the socially acceptable realm. As a result I think "deep fried (anything)", beer, pornography, and drugs are going to be severely under-represented. Meanwhile things like sunsets, long walks, holding hands, and books are going to look much more popular than they actually are.
