Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway (D) reported raising more than $300,000 from his first web-based fundraiser in his campaign to win the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.).
Meanwhile, GOP candidate Rand Paul appealed to his supporters to help him raise more than $350,000 in two weeks for his fall television ad campaign. "I hate to ask, but I urgently need your help," Paul told supporters via email and social media.
Conway's original goal for Tuesday's Internet fundraiser was $260,000, and he raised about $310,000, his campaign disclosed Wednesday.Paul, an ohpthalmologist and the son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), reported having $361,000 in the bank at the end of June. Conway had $703,000 on hand, and as of the end of June had loaned his campaign $525,000.
A CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corp.
survey of registered Kentucky voters released Wednesday showed a tie between the two candidates at 46 percent. The poll of 869 registered voters in Kentucky was conducted Sept. 2-7, with a margin of error of 3.5 points.
The survey follows a SurveyUSA poll released over the weekend that showed Paul ahead 55 percent to 40 percent. Democrats pushed back on those numbers by publicizing a poll done by Democratic pollster John Anzalone which showed the race a statistical dead heat, with Paul at 48 percent to Conway's 45 percent.
