Has anyone even claimed that Koran burning was illegal?
I'm asking because I get the impression that several posts are being generated that stress the fact that the First Ammendment allows this, without anything that prompted them.

Shouldn't we wait for people to actually come out and question the legality of the thing before we come out and defend the legality of it?
Something about how such a discussion is being preempted has a weird feel to it.

If my cousin who just turned 21 came to me and asked me what I thought of his idea to drink half a gallon of Jack Daniels, I don't think
the first response that would pop up in my head would be "This is totally legal.". I think there would be other things I would have to say about it first.

The reason why it feels weird is because if someone has nothing else to say about the Koran burning than that it is legal, is because
one could get the impression that one is somehow endorsing it.

2. It is legal, and stupid to do that.

It is legal to run around in a half naked chicken suit making a fool of yourself and irritating people, but most don't do that.

I would not burn a book, although I also would not change a song or movie, and I seen some of that happening also. Not that they are the same level, but I can glimpse the feeling, although the idea of sacred seems to be attached to objects not thoughts to often in my view.

I would not get mad at someone that did, unless it was the only access to a book or song, then that is a different thing. Although I would not respect someone that does such a thing, because it is dumb, but not respecting him is my choice.

Really he is not burning the Koran, he is burning a few copies of it. The people that change content in movies or songs for political impact, or keep much of culture away from people, that is actually worse in my view, since many stories and thoughts don't even have an original source if only the edited ones are found on Tv and Internet.

But I degrees, people should ignore his acts as the choice of one person, and he should realize all he is doing is saying he doesn't like what is in that book. He is just a person, he does not represent many people, except for people that agree with what he does.

So he can do it.

But it is stupid to do that.

But really in a way I understand why people talk about it, it points to huge failures in the ways some think, although that is just my view.

There is alot to learn from it, although I think it is happening because of election actually.

Note, the burning of the books is the chicken part. Since he can not face questioning his thoughts on his faith. If he thinks and feels about the topic, and really tries to understand his own feelings and thoughts, he might see he is afraid that he could be wrong about his faith, and from that fear, he wont let anything get him to think about it. He probably fears faith itself, and has to be sure. That is interesting. Not trying to judge him, but that is a common thing for people to think.

That is just a guess though. Could be wrong.

12. I agree, and welcome to DU!
Pretty sure you can legally burn any book or flag you want to in the USA, as long as you own it.

Rhetorical Question: if a Quran is burning and nobody knows about it, did it even happen?

19. thank you
in reference to your question, one of those phelps family idiots (I think it was the wife) said that they already HAD burned a Quran in the past. Since the press didn't cover it, nothing happened.

Sounds like a good policy for the press - ignore people who burn the Quran.

11. On DU? Yes. Two threads even tried to claim it was treason
and both seemed to advocate for some form of prior restraint.

One person suggested the President have Terry Jones kidnapped.

Also, there are a great many countries where burning the Koran is illegal.
