‘America Speaking Out’ Against Republican Proposals On Republican Website
‘America Speaking Out’ Against Republican Proposals On Republican Website
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/09/10/america-speaks-out/

House Republicans have proudly touted their America Speaking Out website — which allows visitors to suggest and vote on various policy prescriptions — as a new and innovative way to involve the American people in the democratic process and the creation of federal policy. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) said the site is “revolutionizing the way we govern by engaging the American people and seeking your ideas for making things better.” Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) said that America Speaking Out proves “the Democrat majority isn’t listening, but House Republicans will.”

But Republicans might want to look at what’s garnering interest on their own site, as the proposal receiving the most “interest” (and the second highest number of overall votes) in the job creation section is to “stop the outsourcing of jobs from America to other countries that do not pay taxes into the U.S. and stop the tax breaks that are given to these companies that are outsourcing.” Here’s a screenshot (from 5:27 p.m. yesterday)

As The Wonk Room explains, Democrats have proposed multiple pieces of legislation closing corporation tax loopholes that encourage the offshoring of jobs, and Republicans have opposed each one. So if America is speaking out so loud and clear, why aren’t Republicans listening?

1. A posting from the site..
A poster called "Dune" had an interesting comment on the America Speaking Out site under the fiscal responsibility thread:

"America Speaking out, neat idea though it is, is being censored on the back end, specific topics are having the maximum number of votes capped, and the user is not informed that his vote didnt count.. this happens in the background as an ajax call with a result of "aspx-forbidden" when the specific comment has been capped.. while its true that the site itself does not seem to prevent the posting of topics it doesnt like, it does prevent those topics from gaining any more votes once its been noticed, and so the fiction of "what america wants" is crafted for the next election"

Imagine that!

6. It keeps the proles occupied and amused
The website isn't meant to be taken seriously. The only voices that matter on tax cuts for the wealthy are . . . the wealthy. Nobody making less than $250,000 a year is allowed time to speak on the nation's broadcast bands or on the cable shows. It would just be too confusing and messy, and some people might form the wrong idea about whether the wealthy should help pay for the society that rewards them so lavishly (correct answer: not just no, but hell no).
