Two questions, re:Koran/Bible burning
Edited on Fri Sep-10-10 07:50 PM by ProudToBeBlueInRhody
1) Are bibles regularly burned in protests in Muslim countries? I see American flags burned, but not bibles.

2) Regarding this new right-wing meme about the military burning confiscated bibles in Afghanastan......wasn't there a story about them doing the same to Korans under the same circumstances?

1. In most Islamic countries the same rights to respect and worship are extended to
all monotheistic religions in accordance with the Qu'ran's instructions to offer respect to followers of the other holy books

The Qur'an speaks well of the relationship it has with former books (the Torah and the Gospel) and attributes their similarities to their unique origin and saying all of them have been revealed by the one God.<104>

Indonesia, the largest Islamic country in the world gives all monotheistic religions the same legal status under their unifying ideology
called Pancasila

And even more important is that Islam has extremely strong rules regarding the ethics on the favorable treatment of visitors.

During the middle ages when Christians were openly burning Jews during the Inquisition Islam provided an open sanctuary. No Jews have been burned by religious pogroms by Muslims.

I don't really want to get into an interpretation aspect of what it says or what law was made that might not end up being enforced like it should, because I'm sure there are 100 people who will fly in with 100 responses where it isn't so favorable to other religions and outsiders......just like the bible, some people may not actually FOLLOW what it preaches or asks of those who follow it.

My only questions were if these anti-US protests feature bible burning and if the military had burned Korans under similar situations regarding disposal.

2. I'm having a hard time understanding this.
The words of the Koran and the Bible are sacred. The ink and paper are not. The words and ideology is not being burned.
I don't agree with the symbolism Jones is using but he does have a right to do this.

When the Nazi's burned books they were destroying all vestiges of the existence of Jewish author along with things they considered
at odds with their warped ideas.

The Christian publishing houses destroy these types of books almost daily because they are overstocked. I am willing to bet the same things
happens at publishing houses printing the Koran. I realize it they are not demonstrating or protesting but they are still destroying sacred books.

5. Burning any book is a sign of intellectual weakness
It's like punching a guy in the face during a debate because you've got nothing with which to answer.

But that's not really why I started this thread.....I'm trying to get some answers to reply to pro-Koran burners.......

7. I think the bigger picture is the REASON for the burning. The idiot in
Florida is burning to insight a reaction, the military burned so there would be NO reaction. BIG DIFFERENCE, IMO.

9. I understand all that
But the same people screaming about the military bible burning are also claiming the same would not have happened to confiscated Korans. And I seem to recall it DID. And on the flip side, some here trying to make hay out of it.
