Californians will soon vote on Proposition 19, which, if approved, would allow for the possession, sale, and taxation of cannabis. The expected social benefits of legalization cannot be overstated: increased revenue due to taxation (which can be spent on education, jobs etc), decreased state incarceration costs, law enforcement focusing on violent crime instead of busting pot smokers, decreased involvement with Mexican marijuana producers and the violence that accompanies them, sick individuals having access to medicine that eases their suffering, and, hopefully, setting a successful example for other states to follow in the future.
Even if you doubt that these benefits will materialize with Prop 19's passage, there is no doubt that the War on Marijuana has been a failure since the '70s. Common sense tells us that prohibition has not worked. Yet, there is opposition to Prop 19 and they are well-funded. They have the money to buy lots of airtime and run ads designed to scare people into ignoring their common sense.
Tonight, I donated $15 to
http://yeson19.com/ . It is important that voters hear facts and common sense, not just fear-mongering. If you are disappointed with the candidates on your ballot and have decided to voice your dissatisfaction by keeping your checkbook closed this cycle, please donate a little $ to
http://yeson19.com/ , NORML, or other proponent of Prop 19, even if it's only $5. If successful, Prop 19 could end up being the most important vote of the year, or even the decade. Let's help get it done!
