Family to recieve 1.5 million dollar settlement in Poling case.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_162-20015982-10391695.html

Then, in July 2000, she was vaccinated against nine diseases in one doctor's visit: measles, mumps, rubella, polio, varicella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and Haemophilus influenzae.

Afterward, her health declined rapidly. She developed high fevers, stopped eating, didn't respond when spoken to, began showing signs of autism, and began having screaming fits. In 2002, Hannah's parents filed an autism claim in federal vaccine court. Five years later, the government settled the case before trial and had it sealed. It's taken more than two years for both sides to agree on how much Hannah will be compensated for her injuries.

In acknowledging Hannah's injuries, the government said vaccines aggravated an unknown mitochondrial disorder Hannah had which didn't "cause" her autism, but "resulted" in it. It's unknown how many other children have similar undiagnosed mitochondrial disorder.

And I think this is the really important part:

It's unknown how many other children have similar undiagnosed mitochondrial disorder.

So in other words:
All vaccines are safe. Except for a certain number of people who will have a negative reaction to them.

2. Virtually every drug has nasty side effects for a small % of the population.
Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 10:29 AM by TexasObserver
Why people want to insist vaccines are different is a mystery. Like all drugs, they affect some individuals differently than others. A drug that can save a million people might also kill 100 people for reasons that are less than clear.

The vaccine debate fails to recognize that most powerful drugs have the potential to hurt badly a small percentage of the population. The question is not IF they cause harm in a small number, but whether a particular case was caused by the drug or drugs.

Holding drug manufacturers liable spreads the cost of risk to the entire population of those who use the drugs or vaccines.

There are nearly 5000 cases pending in the federal vaccine court.

3. The government considers that child to be just collateral damage in the good fight.
But an "undiagnosed mitochondrial disorder"? Which mitochondrial disorder is that, I wonder?

And if we are expected to gamble our lives, there should be a screening test for the "undiagnosed mitochondrial disorder that everyone takes prior to the injections.

4. Why don't you read what the Polings themselves
have written? Or read Orac's blog on the case?

If you understood the medical facts of the case, you wouldn't ask why this is a 'undiagnosed' disorder.

Simply put, Hannah Poling is a medical outlier. Her disorder is undiagnosed because no one has seen what she has before, and what she has probably won't be repeated.

There's a reason why the parents accepted the settlement they did.

Hannah Poling isn't a symbol. She's a little girl.

But it isn't very nice to attempt to use a little girl's medical issues without understanding what they are.

9. Nice has nothing to do with it.
I feel sorry for anyone who is damaged by injections.

Regardless of how rare her underlying medical condition is, injecting your child is still a gamble. No matter how remote the odds, when it happens to your child it is disastrous.

I'm Pro-Choice regarding injections. If you aren't, then we disagree.

And whether we call the outcome 'medical outlier' or 'collateral damage', the damage is still done.

10. Not vaccinating your child is a bigger gamble
Not only is it a bigger gamble for your own child, it's a gamble for those who have yet to be vaccinated who come into contact with your child. So if you want to talk about "collateral damage" that might be a good place to start. So if you want to keep your child locked in your house all the time, feel free to exercise all the "Pro-Choice" you want. In fact, that might not be a bad idea in your case as you could better protect them from getting hit by a truck, struck by lightening, eaten by a pack of rabid muscats, and all sorts of other irrational things.

Cheers!

but not all. We rely on "herd immunity" to stop it from effecting everyone.

Besides that, what happens if your sick ass comes around my child who is to young to get the vaccine?

Now, if you make the "choice" to not get them, and then move to the middle of alaska in the boonies somewhere, miles from anyone, I can support that.

If you want to be in society, get vaccines.

It is criminal to not do so, and I mean that literally. Criminal. My God, I'm, old enough, barely but still old enough, to have known people in leg braces, and hearing my parents tell stories of friends who got sick one afternoon and were dead the next. Not that long ago, the majotity of children didn't live to see their first birthday. Go walk around a graveyard whose graves span 150 years or so.

If you don't want to vaccinate, then buy an island or live in the wilderness and be self-sufficient.

22. Might as well

We have to give up some rights to live in society. Public health is one of those.

Everyone has a choice, then what happens when a majority of the people don't want to do it?

People start dying. And not just the person who didn't want the vaccine, it's other people, too young or the old.

Making that decision doesn't just affect you, it affects everyone around you.

I believe people have the freedom to make decisions about their bodies, including injections, and that choice must be respected.

Kinda like iraq.

Every study conducted shows no relation between vaccines and autism. Comparisons between vaccinated and vaccinated children show the exact same rates of autism. If vaccines really caused autism, unvaccinated children would have lower rates or no autism, which is not the case.

This ONE case was because of a genetic defect.

13. It sounds like a sad and very unusual story. A lot of these are very serious diseases:
measles, polio, and tetanus have caused many deaths; mumps is a disease we'd like to eliminate, since it can cause sterility in post-pubertal males

Nobody pushes vaccination for purely ideological reasons: it is promoted when it clear public health advantages are associated with it

The first smallpox protection was to infect people with mild smallpox cases: it usually worked but it had the definite risk of producing fatal smallpox: about 1 in 70 died from the effort to protect. Use of cowpox instead eventually eliminated the terror of smallpox worldwide, but infecting with cowpox was not entirely risk-free: in the early years, perhaps 1 in 2000 died from the effort to protect

One can sometimes guard against known diseases by various methods, like vaccination, but of course there's no way to guard against injuries where standard and justified medical prophylaxis "aggravates" some "unknown disorder." We simply try to do our best with what we currently know

Hannah's mitochondrial disorder is not rare...1 in 200 carry a hidden genetic mitochiondrial defect and most people don't even know it...in addition to autism, mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to many neurological and neuropsychiatric dieseases incl. MS, ALS, Alzheimers, bipolar disorder, diabetes, epilepsy, Parkinson.. According to mito experts, MT dysfunction is at the core of many diseases (see letter to Obama from mito experts below)

The question is....how may other Hannah's are there out there?..

here's more on the subject ....

Large Reservoir Of Mitochondrial DNA Mutations Identified In Humans

ScienceDaily (Aug. 12, 2008) — "Researchers at the University of Newcastle, England, and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech in the United States have revealed a large reservoir of mitochondrial DNA mutations present in the general population. Clinical analysis of blood samples from almost 3,000 infants born in north Cumbria, England, showed that at least 1 in 200 individuals in the general public harbor mitochondrial DNA mutations that may lead to disease."

58. That's what I'm guessing
her little immune system got bombarded all at once & just couldn't keep up. I got the flu shot 2 weeks ago (doctor's orders) & was out of it for the next few days. When I was in the hospital 2 years ago, I had to get vaccinated against pneumonia & something else I can't remember; they told me I also needed the flu shot, but to wait a few weeks to give the ones they gave me time to do their job.

Getting 9 at a time is nuts, & I question the need for a chicken pox vaccination. The others, not so much. And why no small pox vaccine anymore? There are still live strains of that nasty disease in existence!
