Four dead in Megabus double-decker crash near Syracuse

from the Toronto Star:

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Four people are dead and many others injured after a double-decker bus travelling to Toronto from Philadelphia crashed in central New York.

The Megabus-operated vehicle was registered as carrying 37 passengers when it crashed around 2:30 a.m. on the Onondaga Lake Parkway in Salina, a Syracuse suburb some 400 kilometres east of Toronto. Officials confirm 24 people were taken to hospital.

Don Carmichael, senior vice-president for Coach USA, which operates Megabus, says the details of what may have caused the crash are “very sketchy” at this point.

He said the bus should have been on Interstate-81 when heading into Syracuse.

“He was off the prescribed route,” said Carmichael, who was in the midst of travelling to the crash from Ottawa. “And we don’t know at this time why he was off the prescribed route.” ...........(more)

1. What caused the crash was running into a railroad bridge
that ist couldn't fit under and there are signs telling vehicles that are to tall NOT to go under the bridge.

4. We have a couple under passes like that around here. There are signs, flashing
lights, more signs and we still get a semi crash into them about once a month.

2. Megabus is the Ryanair of the bus service industry
They are the most unprofessional, irresponsible transportation company I have ever had the displeasure of using. They think nothing of stranding people on a dark street corner somewhere in the middle of the night, overbooking the buses, and driving with unsafe equipment and untrained drivers. They don't even pay for space at terminals.

5. You'd be safer on a bus in India than on Megabus
...Since they aren't able to drive as fast. And they actually show up most of the time.
