President Obama: "We gather here to remember on hallowed ground..."

So is the ground "hallowed" because the attack occurred there? Or is it because of the number of people who died? If there had been for example, one victim, would the ground still be considered "hallowed"?

Maybe it's just me. I don't like the term. And for those who do, how can they justify anything at all being built there?

1. My take is that it is considered hallowed in the venerated sense.

Many individual acts of heroism took place there. Many heroic people gave their lives in an attempt to rescue others. Many innocent people died in a tragic event.

I think that building a monument dedicated to these people and events is appropriate - but possibly a little over the top and sentimental depending on the approach.

3. Agreed. I was tremendously moved while visiting the USS Arizona memorial,

despite many who were running, laughing, and snapping happy photos. Pretty sure I would feel the same at the WTC site.

That's where the victims remains ended up.

I would think that it would be appropriate in this case because many of the bodies were never recovered. Many loved ones never returned, so that place is their resting place.
