13. I keep going back to this image I have of America - through the filter of being a mom.

Funny, I look at pretty much everything through the filter of being a mom. I see this country, my country, as a spoiled child or MAYBE teenager, compared to the rest of the world's nations. Most of those have been around for centuries, in some cases, millennia. When rumsfeld and the rest of those bastards sneered at "Old Europe," I kept thinking - gee, those nations have been around since before we ever even were conceived in the mind of anyone. They've seen and survived and gained wisdom and maturity from all those years and years and years and years of existence, all those social and economic and military and evolutionary and scientific changes and developments and impacts. The same as with any person. You grow from infancy and you change, mature, evolve. These nations with their long, rich, and complicated histories, are the adults of the family of nations. By contrast, we're the pipsqueak kid on the block who is still young and immature and self-absorbed and self-involved and kind of a spoiled brat. And we're sure behaving that way, collectively.

It strikes me that we sure could learn from our elders, as a country, the way we can learn from our elders as individuals. The most sensible, clear-eyed, flexible, and most instinctively mature among us do. Others of us just want to be "no-one-is-the-boss-of-ME" snot-noses and disrespect our elders because we already think we know everything, and throw tantrums when we don't get our way. I see the teabaggers that way, and what consistently pops up in my mind is - "shit, who the hell brought them up?!?!?!?" Nothing but flagrant and unchecked misbehavior as far as the eye can see. And not only is it not checked, it's actually rewarded and reinforced with the intoxicants of fame and notoriety - and sometimes even further, more clout AND financial rewards as well.

The worst of human nature is what our adversaries plumb to the depths - to get ahead for themselves.
